Morning all,
With a Minimum of just -0.2 degrees and a ground frost this morning at Gilmore, it was the second lowest November Minimum observed here since we started in 1991. It is also the latest day we have had a frost at Gilmore. The coldest November morning was 11th November 1996 with -0.8 degrees. There have only been two days with a November frost at Gilmore since 1991!
Lack of rain this Spring is becoming serious. September; 23.1mm (Average 47.9mm) October 14.1mm (Average 59.8mm) November so far, 14.3mm Average 79.3mm) Total so far is 51.4mm against Spring Average of 197.0mm.
Yesterday a strong front crossed us around 3pm with a short but heavy shower and a wind gust of 64km/hr.
Cheers ,

Gavin

Canberra Airport's -2.3 was a record for there, noting that the post-2008 site is colder in such situations than its predecessor (so the -1.8 in 1967 is probably more significant). Numerous other November records in the southern half of NSW, northern Victoria and parts of SA.

A brisk 3.9C here this morning northern suburbs of Adelaide, not quite a record.
Adelaide itself made 6.3C which was just short of its record of 5.5 back in 1974.

November records across SA though were..
-0.1 Cummins (previous record 0.6 in 2020)

0.2 Kingscote (0.4 in 2010)

1.1 Nuriootpa (equal 1.1 in 2001)

1.5 Loxton (2.7 in 2002)

1.7 Parndana (2.7 in 2019)

1.9 Renmark (2.3 in 2004)

2.4 Pt Lincoln (4.1 in 1992)

6.7 Stenhouse Bay (7.9 in 2022)

There appear to have been some spiking issues with the Port Lincoln value, although it very likely did legitimately get below 4.1. Cummins looks to be the first instance of a November sub-0 at an Eyre Peninsula site.

In total I get three known records at locations in our long-term set (Mildura, Canberra, West Wyalong), one probable but not clearly determined (Port Lincoln) and two which are records for current sites but there have been lower at previous sites (Nuriootpa, Nowra). One of the more impressive cold events we've seen for a while. In addition there are some late-season records (i.e. coldest ever so late in the year), including Adelaide.

Here's a graphical summary, with records at stations with at least 15 years of history highlighted.

Ongoing negative AAO/SAM appears to be the most direct driver of the incursion of dry air on Tuesday that led to the cold night. It's probably also implicated in the dry ground conditions - at least in the east, which would have helped.

I was on 1.3 at 5.48am this morning and a frost.

Rutherglen's Research Station showed minus 2.1 which according to Weatherzone is the coldest November on record.

Too cold to wear my shorts to work.

Rutherglen didn't get a record (they had a -2.8 in 1967), but plenty of other sites in the region did.
