Hey everyone!

My name is Paulina Urbanowicz and I've been apart of the Texas ultimate community for a few years through the UT women's program and a few women's club teams since then. A year ago I started volunteering for a local organization called Explore Austin, and I'm enjoying it so much that I wanted to send along some information and share the opportunity for any of you to apply to be a mentor if you think this might strike your fancy!

Explore Austin's mission is simple: To change the lives of underserved youth through mentoring, leadership, and adventure. If you want more details, check out the description at the end of this email and this super cool 4-minute video about the program. With Explore Austin, you'll do things like rock climbing, backpacking, canoeing, and mountain biking - but prior experience or skill in those things is not at all required. Another nice aspect is that you get to do all of these fun things at hardly any cost from you at all. There is a time commitment that I'm happy to discuss with anyone who's interested, but I'll say it's manageable with a busy life, and would create limited if any conflicts with your ability to play winter league or the club frisbee season.

If you are interested - applications are due December 1. Find it here. If you have any questions at all, I'd be happy to grab a drink with you and tell you more about the organization and what it's like to be a Mentor.

We have an event tonight where you can learn more and get to know some other mentors while enjoying some beer. The recruitment happy hour is today(!!) Nov 11 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at the Waller Creek Pub House.

Thanks for reading if you've made it this far-- and please let me know if you have any questions or are interested!

As promised, bit more about Explore Austin:

Explore Austin is a six-year mentoring and outdoor adventure program for underserved youth. In sixth grade young boys and girls, or “Explorers”, team up with fourteen fellow Explorers and five adult Mentors to embark on a journey of leadership, mentoring, and adventure. For one Saturday a month teams rock climb, mountain bike, paddle, and hike throughout Austin. For one week each summer they put those skills to the test in the backcountries of Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Shared adventures, forge bonds, and equip youth to navigate not only the rocky terrain of the outdoors, but also the uneven and unpredictable terrain of life.

Explore Austin is looking for more Mentors to help make this life changing journey possible for the future Explorers awaiting their adventures. You don’t need to be a professional outdoor guide but you should enjoy the outdoors and be open to learning new skills. Common Mentor traits include experience working with youth, a desire to give back, and leadership experience. Current Explore Austin Mentors are changing lives in Austinevery day, but we need more men and women to keep this journey going.

Applications to be considered for the next program year are due December 1, 2015
