Hello all, I hope your T-day holiday was good.
We have an opportunity with Jen Ohlson's book reception Friday at
Runtex 6:30-8:30 pm to do a little of promotion of our (small) efforts
to date to build a Austin area trail vision plan. We do have top
priority trails list that, with the consent of all of those working
with us, we could circulate and have folks who are interested join our
efforts. Below is a quick summary that we would distribute and speak
to. Please let me know if (1) you are in agreement and (2) if you
have any changes or corrections to add.
Also, please visit our google groups site:
http://groups.google.com/group/austintrailsnet.
We're adding more info (downloads, visuals, maps, etc.) regularly (and
we need more) so you should already be a member (or were sent an
invitation) and should be able to chime in.
Thank you!

Awesome Austin Trails Network announces Priority Trails List
November 30, 2007.
Trails are the most popular parks facilities in Austin and Travis
County. Polls conducted several times since 1995 have confirmed
this. In Austin alone, we have over 117 miles of trails for walking,
hiking, running, and biking.
However, most of our trails don't connect. There are gaps and it can
hard be hard to connect from one trail to another. Back in 1996, a
group working under the banner Austin Metro Trails Council (later
Austin Metro Trails & Greenways) came together and proposed "Greenways
and Trails: A Vision for Greater Austin." Included in the vision map
were the Walnut Creek (Eastside) Trail, the Town Lake Broadwalk and
the Bull Creek Trail. While some great progress has been made,
especially in land acquisition and design for the Walnut Creek Trail,
much remains to be done.
A group of citizens, non-profit groups and government representatives
has begun to meet once again and lay out a revised Trails Vision
plan. We are calling ourselves the Awesome Austin Trails Network.
Our first step was to identify trails (either whole or portions) that
have the greatest potential to build and extend our long distance
trail network. Many are familiar. With the 11 trails listed below,
we could easily triple the miles of trails in the Austin area in the
very near future.
- Town Lake Trail Boardwalk
- Walnut Creek (Eastside) Trail
- Capital Metro Rails with Trails (Austin to Leander)
- Oak Hill Y to Downtown Trails (includes COA Ped & Bike program's
proposed Barton Creek
Bridge)
- Walk for A Day
- Waller Creek Trail
- Manor Rails with Trails
- Gilleland Creek Trail
- Country Club Creek Trail
- Colorado River Trail
- Williamson Creek / Onion Creek Complex Trails
We believe that a network of individuals, organizations and government
representatives, working together, is the best way to push these
efforts forward. We invite you to join us in this effort.
