Happy New Year to all of the members the Austin Trails Network!

We hope that everyone is doing well and enjoying some of our crazy weather.

And, its time to turn our attention back to the Trails Network.  There's quite a few updates here, so please read on and please let me know if you have questions, concerns or need more info....

1) Join the mailing list
2) Texas Trails Network Conference
3) Forestry Mowing at Country Club Creek Trail
4) Country Club Creek Agenda Item at City Council.
5) Asking for a City Trails Division
6) Possible Name for Trails Network?

1) Join the mailing list.  A few of you have not joined the google groups mailing list allowing you to communicate with like minded trail people everywhere. So, Jen, Judi, Parc. Griffin, Alice, Eric, Annick and Malcolm (and whoever else might be interested) - please join - visit - http://groups.google.com/group/austintrailsnet/ - to sign up.  I'll also send out an invite all those who are not members shortly.

2) Texas Trails Network Conference.  Just a reminder that the annual Texas Trails Network Conference is coming up Jan 23-25 in the Woodlands, TX.  All types of trails (walk, bike, horse, motorized, etc.) are covered and its a neat way to find out what's going on in other cities across Texas.  More info and sign-up on the Texas Trails Network website at http://www.texastrails.org/  (I won't be able to attend due to a previously scheduled trip.)

3) Forestry Mowing at Country Club Creek Trail.  Two of our ATN members, Jim Temple and Macolm Yeatts, have been working the past few years on a new trail (The Country Club Creek Trail) running southeast from Guerrero Colorado River Park. Here's a map and info: http://www.austinparks.org/apfweb/park.php?&parkId=683 They've made huge strides, including a number of big volunteer workdays in the past year.  Austin Parks Foundation is funding some tree work to remove invasive species as well downed trees and brush, open up views and allow us to restore a more native landscape.  Work began today and will continue for the next 2-3 weeks.  I'd be happy to show you what's going on.   Our contractor, Native Texas, uses a forestry mower (a really cool machine) to cut down and grind up trees on site.  They are working from about 8 am to 4 pm and I'll be out there daily in the mornings, but especially tomorrow, Friday and much of next week.  If you'd like to get a tour of what's going on, email me or give me a call on my cell phone 965-1960 and we can coordinate times.  We'll meet at  the Kreig Fields trailhead off of Pleasant Valley Road.

4) Country Club Creek Agenda Item at City Council.  Councilmember Lee Leffingwell is sponsoring the following agenda items this Thursday:

Approve a resolution directing the City Manager to work with the Southeast Austin Trails and Greenways Alliance (SETGA) to secure the needed easements for extending the Country Club Creek Hike & Bike Trail from Elmont Street to Oltorf Street and then identify alternative routes to connect the Hike and Bike Trail to Mabel Davis Park, and report back to City Council in 90 days. (Council Member Lee Leffingwell Council Member Mike Martinez )

Malcolm Yeatts is speaking at Citizens Communication in support of this agenda item.  This a KEY deliverable, one that we'd like to see have broader support for all parts of the City, continuing with Oak Hill's efforts.

ACTION: Please send a note to city council in support of this item or sign up to speak in favor or in support of the agenda item at City Hall anytime before then.

5) Asking for a City Trails Division.  We believe that it is time to formally ask the city for a City group that is focused on trails. I would propose that we ask for time at an upcoming meeting of the Land Use and Transportation Committee (made up of Council members, Dunkerley, McCracken and Cole. I would put together a short presentation talking about the priority trails, all of the volunteer work that is happening to improve and expand our efforts and how having a division focused on these efforts would allow us to better leverage both city and volunteer resources.  We are thinking of shooting for the Feb meeting.

ACTION: Please let us know if you are in support of pursuing this effort.  Again, this is to begin planting the seeds for a larger trails effort in the City working with all of our groups to really advance the trails efforts in Austin.

6) Possible Name for Trails Network?

Rachel Proctor May, in a burst of brainstorming, has come up with a great possible name for either a portion of the trails network (she was thinking of the eastern trails along creeks/greenbelts like Walnut Creek, Wilbarger, Country Club, etc.) So, how about the Headwaters Loop?  Lots of our trails run along creeks and we want them to be (a) tied in with the headwaters of each creek) and (b) we also want them to loop and tie into each other.  I like it, but please let us know what you think.

Remember, anyone who is a member of the Trails network can send email to everyone else and anyone can join.  So, make sure you're a member (again, visit: http://groups.google.com/group/austintrailsnet/)

Ok, that's enough, there's a lot going on - we haven't even mentioned the latest news for Town Lake Trail, Walk for a Day and others, but we'll get there.

All the best,

Charlie

My thoughts:
1) I am on the email list
2) Can't make the TTN in Woodlands.
3) Would like to see Forestry Mowing at Country Club Creek Trail one day next week.
4) I emailed City Council supporting the Item 50 resolution at Thursday Council meeting.
5) Excellent idea to have a City Trails Division in PARD. I may be able to make the Feb. 11 Land Use and Transportation Committee meeting at 3pm
6) Name for the group - Headwaters Loop left me with a "what's that?" feeling.
Need more brainstorming.
Here's one I thought of:
Austin Texas Trails Network.
ATTN also is a good acronym for ATTENTION! Let's GitErDone!
