2. Lucio execution stayed

From the Texas Coalition Against the Death Penalty:

“On April 25, 2022, just two days before her scheduled execution, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted a stay to Melissa Lucio. The Court ordered the 138th Judicial District Court of Cameron Country to consider multiple claims related to new evidence of Melissa’s innocence of the accidental death of her daughter, Mariah.”

3. Big Brother comes to Pflugerville

From the Williamson County Libertarian Party:

“Pflugerville City Council laughs their way through a unanimous vote for surveillance state tech. ‘It’s great, that sounds like a wonderful, wonderful program. It’s a little bit 1984, but not too much.’

“Cameras will be placed at every city entrance, maximizing the number of Pflugerville residents and businesses being watched by the government.

“They not only scan license plates, but bumper stickers. The government will be able to identify and track your “Don’t Tread on Me”, “Come and Take It”, or campaign bumper stickers. Cross your fingers they don’t disagree with them.

“They brag about how this has also been deployed by Round Rock, Texas – City Government, Sunset Valley, Travis County, as well as used to spy on parents in Pflugerville ISD. Were you aware of this?”

5. Early voting continues through Tuesday, May 3; Election Day May 7

Two Texas Constitution amendments, local municipal propositions (Austin, Cedar Park, Leander), and some mayoral and city council races (Bee Cave, Cedar Park, Leander, Lakeway) will appear on our next ballot in Travis County.

Election Day is Saturday, May 7.

Early voting will run through Tuesday, May 3.

In Austin, Proposition A will appear on the ballot: “Shall an initiative ordinance be approved to (1) eliminate enforcement of low-level marijuana offenses and (2) ban the use of ‘no knock’ warrants by Austin police?”

LPTravis recommends a “For” vote on Proposition A in the City of Austin.

The Libertarian Party of Texas recommends “For” votes on Texas constitutional amendments Propositions 1 and 2. These amendments reduce property taxes somewhat. (However, LPTexas reminds us that it supports elimination of property taxes.)

A sample ballot.

6. May the Fourth: Can the Force Fix the World?

America’s Future (AF) empowers young people to be active, civil, and curious citizens who build freer communities that lead to fulfillment, dignity, and happiness for all.”

On Star Wars Day, AF’s Texas Hub will host a book talk and signing with Stephen Kent, author of How the Force Can Fix the World.

“What if we looked to Star Wars for more than just entertainment? How the Force Can Fix the World takes this challenge on by analyzing the core principles of the Star Wars franchise: HOPE, CHOICE, HUMILITY, EMPATHY, REDEMPTION, BALANCE and rejecting FEAR. Together, these are the Star Wars roadmap for living better lives, and maybe even fostering better politics.”

10. What is a libertarian?

Some say libertarians are "plotting to take over the world and leave you alone."

David Boaz of the Cato Institute has described libertarianism this way: "Don't hit other people. Don't take their stuff. Keep your promises."

In this 20-minute video, Mr. Boaz speaks on "Introduction to Libertarian Thought."

"The Libertarian Mind" is the subject of this 13.5-minute video from 2015 featuring several Cato scholars.

Take this short (10 question) online quiz from the Advocates for Self-Government to see if you might have libertarian leanings: “The World’s Smallest Political Quiz.
