WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES?

Experts Gather after Film on December 11 at University of Texas

AUSTIN, TEXAS, [November 28, 2012] – “Electric cars are an exciting prospect for our environment, but there are a lot of unanswered questions about how we manage the extra burdens on our electricity system,” says Ross Baldick PhD, director of the Electric Vehicle Transportation and Electricity Convergence Center  (EV-TEC) at The University of Texas at Austin.

“In order to make a mass market for electric vehicles, we need to ask some hard questions,” adds Dr. Baldick. “How do we pay for roads without adding gasoline taxes? How do we plan for charging stations in our communities? How do we use electric vehicles to increase renewables?”

As a way to highlight both the social promise and technical challenges of electric vehicles, EV-TEC will host a screening of “Revenge of the Electric Car,” followed by an expert panel and reception. Panelists from General Motors, Nissan, Toyota, UT, and Frontier Associates will discuss:

ü  Will the market go all-electric or hybrid?

ü  Will battery prices ever go low enough to compete with gasoline cars?

ü  Will there ever be enough electric cars on the road to make a significant environmental difference?

The event will be held 4–8pm on December 11 at the Blanton Museum, The University of Texas at Austin, Smith Building, 200 E MLK, Austin, Texas. The event is free and open to the public. Sponsors: General Motors and Nissan.

Dr. Ross Baldick is available for interviews on this and other electric vehicle topics. To schedule an interview: 512-471-5879 orbal...@ece.utexas.edu.

The Electric Vehicle Transportation and Electricity Convergence Center (EV-TEC) (www.ev-tec.org) fosters multidisciplinary research on the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles with the aim of maximizing their economic and social benefits. The center is a joint effort of Texas A&M University, The University of Texas at Austin, and the National Science Foundation, in partnership with private and governmental agencies.
