I first did RR in early 90’s, maybe 89. It was the first year they opened it to non-Hobies. Raced a N5.8 - complete amateur. We understood that ground crew could access Hobie Hilton. We only had shorts and maybe a T-shirt. THAT was eye opening. I think we did RR maybe a half dozen times after that. When we brought the N5.0 with the N5.8 rig and 9’ rack - I recall Scott shaking his head at the start. I’m amazed he let us race. If someone showed up with that rig last year, I’m not sure I would have. Having my father run Veracruz for 26 years, I can fully appreciate Scott’s dedication. I think last year was a good start in getting Ruff Riders back going again. I will say I was blessed with an amazing support group - hoping I can get most of them excited again to help out.
Scott was truly amazing. My wife met him on a flight from CA (I think) about 10+ years ago. I’m told the conversation started as most in-flight conversations do and ended up him telling stories to her about me and RR. It was fantastic seeing him at the terminal picking her up. We will definitely remember his kind nature and passion for sailing.
