Last year SailStrong won the award for the most individual donors for a 1st year organization. They're hoping for a repeat. The (non-first year) organization with the most individual donors is awarded an additional $1,000. Let's support SailStrong and build that pipeline of lightweight crew!
If you're not familiar with SailStrong, they are an Austin based, non-profit organization founded to empower under-served youth through sailing. Sometime in the 70's AustinCats began the annual tradition of what has since became Big Brothers, Big Sisters sailing day. The undisputed highlight of the Texas catamaran sailing season. Rumor has it that free kegs were a huge part of the draw of the original event. Oh the 70s, a different time, mixing youth sailing and kegs. AustinCats then began holding raffles during our annual regatta to raise money to send kids to sailing camp at Austin Yacht Club. About 3 years ago, SailStrong was founded by our own inimitable Terri Kiszer, in memoriam of Steve Piche, to formalize and grow these efforts. Whereas AustinCats used to send 3 to 5 kids a year to camp, SailStrong now sponsors a week of camp exclusively for SailStrong kids and organizes volunteer activities and outings throughout the year, such as adventure sails and trips to the Austin Ballet. They are now a 501(c)(3) with a board of directors drawn from the Austin sailing and non-sailing community. Chris Holt and Jim Casto are also / have been board members. This year, one of their kids even heavily highlighted the impact SailStrong had on them in their high school video application. Which is all to say, they are making a real difference. And anything you contribute will make a difference.
If you donate on your Apple phone you can use Apple pay and it's an easy, 2 minute process.
Thanks so much!
Chris
