Scott Key was just a very giving person.  He put a ton of work into running Ruff Riders for at least 20 years at my recollection during the hey day when we had 75+ boats in the ditch.  I always liked Scott.  Scott would make appearances at major distance events like the GT300 and he was always very cordial.  I am going to guess Scott had hit his late 60s.  But yes it seems some of us don't get to the 80 year mark which is close to the average.  So, don't take it for granted.  Carpe Diem!

To fellow sailors and friends,

I just saw on Facebook that Scott Kee passed February 4. There are no
services yet planned but wanted to let y'all know.

Scott was our Ruff Rider leader for many years ... a huge part of the
sailing scene on the gulf coast.

He will be missed.

Oh, no, that's such a shame! He was not that much older than us...

He will be sorely missed.

I first raced RR in 1999, much later than most of you.  I remember Scott was this larger than life, no BS, “old guy”.  Little did I know over the next 10 years he would become a close friend and he would hand me the reigns to his baby.  Just after my first RR myself and a group of friends were headed to go sailing at the beach.  Thor Jones found us at Trammels gas station (well he actually found our girlfriends, but whatever) and took them (us) to Cat Alley instead.  Scott happened to be there that day and we hit it off.  This marked the beginning of my friendship with him and my absorption into the Cat Alley cult.  A day I will never ever forget because it introduced me to the tightest group of friends I will ever have, Scott was one of them.  The core group would spend almost every weekend at Cat Alley sailing, cooking, drinking, and telling highly embellished stories.  Scott was there a lot of those weekends.  When Dennis and I sold our houses, Scott was there for the final party.

I would sail RR and bandit runs another 10 times before taking the helm of the regatta.  This was something Scott was extremely hesitant to do, but I assured him I would do my best to keep the flame alive as long as I could and that lasted another 7 years.  He ran RR for 26yrs (if my memory is correct).  You can’t imagine the logistics involved with safely getting 120 boats from point A to point B across some of the most desolate areas of our country.  I am still in awe of his interpersonal and planning skills.  The RR regatta is one for the history books, at one point it was the longest continuously running regatta in the US.  It provided a gateway to cat sailing for so many families and kids.  I know every person reading this who sailed the race has some epic stories to tell.  Besides RR Scott was also a big fan of the GT300 and always made sure to show up in support.

Aside from sailing he spent his career helping amputees live a better life.  He really did want everyone around him to be better off.

But thinking back, there isn’t really any phrase that could describe him better than, “Are those your legs or are you riding a chicken?”

8 bells.

Thanks,

I didn't know Scott as well as you all, but I did sail the old Ruff Riders format once (and only once!) in the 80s, and then again several times when it was "Round The Island"

First time up the ditch with my roomate's H16 in 1988 or 1989 - probably ~100-120 boats, we were in Hobie 16C fleet.  I still have vivid memories of that weekend, screaming deep reach after a slow morning getting across the bay.  We carried our "camping gear" (i.e couple sheets & pillow) in a trash bag on the trampoline.
Sunday start in light downwind, ~100 cats gybing back & forth in the space of a mile or so till the faster ones worked their way through.  Then, dragging the cat across a mile of mud at Snoopy's, then finally a frershwater shower and real food.

When I went back & sailed it with Terri Reuwsaat in the 2000s, it had changed to Round the Island which I like a lot better, and by then, I was much more appreciative of what it took to put on a regatta of this magnitude,  I talked to Scott several times about the amount of work it took, and it just floored me how committed he was.

I'll always be thankful for those experiences, and to Scott for making this very special event happen.  (and toshannon for keeping it going )
