We were on our way to Fredericksburg Sunday morning for a day of Hell Week.
Passing through Dripping Springs, we were pulled over by a Hays County
Sheriff. We were clocked at 82 mph in a 55 or 65 mph zone.
We were dressed in our dayglow jackets with the tandem clearly visible in
the van. While the officer waited for the radio response on my buddy's
license number, he then politely asked if we could do him a simple favor. He
told us of cyclists frequently riding two abreast while impeding the normal
flow of traffic. Though he was being very polite, I could hear the
frustration in his voice. He mentioned an incident where there were eight
cars stacked up behind two inconsiderate riders on Fitzhugh Road.
He simply requested that we tell our fellow cyclists that his office is
going to begin citing riders for such violations. He specifically mentioned
running the stop sign at Fitzhugh (CR-101) and Hwy 12 , south of Hamilton
Pool Road. We chatted a bit longer about the problem and said that we would
do our part to solve it. He then kindly let us go with a warning.
A warning for a warning? Please do not shoot the messenger, or hate me
because I am beautiful. We have officially been warned for a legitimate
problem of which many in our camp are clearly guilty. If we prefer that
motorists respect us as vehicles that have the same rights to the road, then
we are obligated to ride responsibly. Please obey the laws that are in place
for our own protection.
