Their concern is probably underage kids potentially being solicited.
If you're a legal adult, and are merely conversing with another adult,
there's not much they can do about that. Obviously, of course, that
excludes any plots to create terror. That simple conversing (writing
and replying) was the idea behind Usenet. If the adults want to meet,
that's their business also. This is not a communist or socialist state
and they aren't here to enforce domination like that which occurred
in Germany during World War II. Once the adults meet, they can then
revert to e-mailing each other and bypass this all together.
Meanwhile, there is also Skype with its encryption routine for VOIP.
This allows the individuals to talk without concern of being
intercepted since Skype has not yet given that algorithm to the U.S.
government - who has requested it. So far, they've simply refused.
