October 20th Program

Unix Turbocharging - Part One
General System Performance Analysis and Tuning
This tutorial is the first in a series on techniques to analyze
and improve Unix system performance. In this session, we will
examine what is involved in system performance analysis and discuss
the facilities provided by Unix. We will focus upon measuring
CPU utilization. Although CPU usage is but a small part of system
performance analysis, the statistics there provide a wealth of
information, and often point to specific performance problems that
lie in entirely different areas. This tutorial will be presented
by Chip Rosenthal of Unicom Systems Development.
ISDN for Home Use: Trials and Tribulations
What does it take to get wired, so to speak, with ISDN? Southwestern
Bell has announced their DigiLine(tm) ISDN service several months ago, we
ordered it for home use, and am now using it for Internet connectivity.
What steps did I go through in deciding hardware vendors for customer
premise equipment (CPE)? How was the process in getting it from
Southwestern Bell? After it was installed, what did we need to do? (ie.
wiring, hardware / software configurations, etc.) What kind of
performance should I expect from ISDN?
The program presentation will be presented by Lenny Tropiano of
ICUS Software Systems.

CACTUS Member Jason Zions of HaL Computer has volunteered to give a talk
on PGP(Pretty Good Privacy) public encryption tool. This is the second
talk from Jason in less than six months. We thank him for his dedication
to the group and hope other members will step up and share their knowledge
with the group like Jason has.
Please contact any officer with any ideas and hopefully a volunteer to do
the talk.

Directions To Tandem
--------------------
CACTUS is now meeting at the Tandem Computer facilities in North
Austin. The Tandem facility is located on Tandem Blvd just north of
Wells Branch Parkway. Using MoPac, drive north past 183, Braker, and
Parmer. Two traffic lights after Parmer is Wells Branch Parkway
(Albertsons, Discount Movie Theater, Taco Bell, Exxon and McDonalds on
the corner). Take a right (east) at the light, drive 1 block and turn
left (north) on Tandem Blvd. Then take the first right at Non Stop Blvd
onto the Tandem property.
If you are coming on IH35, head north out of town, exit at the
Pflugerville exit (exit number is 247 - FM1825) and turn left (west)
under the highway onto Wells Branch Parkway. Take Wells Branch
approximately 3 miles and turn right (north) at Tandem Blvd. It is the
last right before you hit Burnet Rd.
Once you have entered the Tandem facility, park and go to the south
side of the building, where the pool is. Enter the gate marked
"Employees only" and you'll see the cafeteria on the left. We meet in
the cafeteria.
[Editor's note: Go into the courtyard where the pool is.]
Additional instruction:
0) If they ask you to sign in, please do.
1) Don't leave the Cafeteria and go into the main building.
2) Pick up your trash, leave the building clean and the chairs the way
you found them. This especially goes for the Pizza boxes and Soda
bottles.
3) Restroom access is available by going back out the door you came in,
and going to the next exterior door, through the gym to use one of the
gym restrooms.
We hope to see you all there!
