Why are southerners so lazy and stupid?
We have all heard the stereotypes of the lazy southern cracker, right?
the laconic, slow talking, moron who can’t seem to perform higher
levels of thought. Is it a truism or an exaggeration?
I just read a very interesting article on the death rates at the
southern Civil War prison, Andersonville, in the recent issue of North
and South magazine that brought to my mind some thoughts on the idea of
southern “laziness”. In this little posting I will cite the author’s
sources in my own thoughts.
In 1892 Dr. Charles Wardell Stiles became the man regaled as the
“discoverer of hookworm disease” (The Journal of Parasitology 25,
1939). He realized that the sub tropical hookworm caused debilitating,
but not necessarily deadly, problems for it’s victims. It leaves the
patient, sallow complexioned, gaunt, lethargic and constantly tired.
The hookworm was found to have infected about 34% of adults in the
south and 37% of their children in 1909. Dr. Stiles launched a campaign
to eliminate the “disease of laziness” form the Deep South and had
treated over 700,000 cases by 1910 (also Journal of Parasitology 25,
1939).
Now, the author of the article in North and South (Dr. David F. Cross)
claims that it is not above suspicion that the slaves imported into the
south by the slave trade brought the African, sub tropical hookworm
with them and infected the entire south and its population.
Hookworms enter the victim by ingestion of infected water and also
through the skin mostly through bare feet walking in dirt. They attach
themselves to the victim’s small intestine linings and eat up the
victim’s blood leading to chronic anemia. The female lays up to 10,000
eggs per day most of which go into the stool and out into the
environment where they can gestate in soft soil (Geer Williams, The
Plague Killers, 1969).
So, the question that comes to my mind is thus: Do we STILL have this
stereotype of the stupid, slow, cracker because of the centuries of
hookworm infections causing such a condition in the south? Are we still
falling prey to this notion even though the hookworm now only accounts
for a small, small number of cases today?
I know many southerners and do not find them to be slow and stupid but
the stereotype persists. Look at modern TV depictions of the southerner
or modern comedians who make fun of the stupid southerner.
Interesting. I had never heard of this great hookworm crusade of 1909
as the infection rate is so small now as to have been mostly forgotten.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A judge sentenced a former Duke University
employee Tuesday for sexual exploitation of a minor.
Frank M. Lombard was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in
prison on federal charges of producing child pornography.
The 43-year-old former associate director of the Health
Inequalities Program at Duke's Center for Health Policy, pled
guilty on December 17, 2009, to sexual exploitation of a minor.
On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler also ordered
Lombard to serve a lifetime of supervised release upon
completion of his prison sentence, during which time he will be
required to register as a sex offender.
According to court documents, Lombard admitted to streaming a
live pornographic image of himself and his 5-year-old adopted
son to another internet user via a webcam in August 2007.
Evidence of the event was found during a search of Lombard's
Durham home in June 2009.
Investigators said in June that they learned of Lombard's
alleged activities through an informant who was also facing sex
charges.
According to an arrest warrant, Lombard made the child sex offer
to a member of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police working
with the Northern Virginia Regional Internet Crimes Against
Children Task Force during an online chat session.
The warrant says Lombard lives in Durham with a gay partner, and
that he has two adopted children.
It says he told the investigator "he could not molest the
adopted 5-year-old child when his partner was around, however
the partner was leaving for a four-day business trip the next
day, which would allow him the ability to molest the child just
as he did the last time his partner had left town."
The warrant goes on to say that Lombard admitted to drugging the
child with Benadryl during the molestation. It also goes into
graphic detail about the molestation - including accusations
Lombard performed oral sex on the child.
In a later chat session, Lombard suggested the person he was
chatting with fly to Raleigh/Durham to have sex with the 5-year-
old.
That same day, Lombard was arrested and child pornography
materials were found in his home.

highlight is more common than you think. The abuse crosses political and
economic factors and reflects the demographics of the community. And no is
also NOT much different north/south/east/west
Highlighting one group for special emphasis is dishonest and smacks of a
personal agenda.
