New Braunfels teacher passes away amid investigation of improper relationship with student

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - Officials have confirmed a high school
teacher at New Braunfels passed away during the opening stages
of an investigation regarding an improper relationship with a
student.

District officials with New Braunfels ISD confirmed Chase
Hyland, a teacher at New Braunfels High School, passed away
after suffering a serious injury Monday.

Officials say it appears Hyland died from a self-inflicted
gunshot wound. In a statement, the district states the
unfortunate event came as a shocking turn of events as he was
placed on leave the same day following allegations against him.

"The events that unfolded today are not anything we anticipated
would happen but have become a reality," the district said in a
statement. "Mr. Hyland was placed on administrative leave on
Monday morning after the administration learned of a complaint
against him. The investigation was just in the beginning stages
and quickly took an unforeseen turn that afternoon."

New Braunfels Police Department also confirmed the investigation
is still underway.
