Maybe there are some Dell insiders reading this newsgroup... do you
like your job?

My wife is in middle/upper-middle management at Dell (ffor 1.5 years)
after 15+ years in the defense/aerospace industry. She is basically
happy but still disappointed that Dell is an old-boy club just like the
rest of the world, with a solid, thick glass ceiling - she was one of
the top international aerospace upper-management women executives in her
"previous life." Dell's pay is average but the carrots dangled are
better than average. The work environment is "open-office cube" with a
few minor perks (op-ex is king!). The company is lean and mean. She
works a 12 hour day on average with no lunch break, she has a skeleton
staff of 14 that works an equal amount. However, overall she is happier
at Dell than her previous job and the stock options are great!

I've been there for 8 years. It's a great place to work. The benefits are
great, and the company's large enough that if you get tired of what you're
doing, you can transfer to another area and do something else.

My girlfriend works for Dell in what is less than a grunt job, let's
just say that. The stock options are great, yes, but her pay is well
below industry average and she does work a lot of overtime because they
have to. There has been a shift at Dell recently, the kind that occors
in any company that has achieved true financial success: They have
started treating the meployees loike crap . Everyone in her department
recently got a ridiculously small raise that amounted to a slap in the
face, even thoguh Dell's profits are going through the roof. Plus all
of thos elittle after-work team building exercises which Dell used to
finaince have mysreioously gone the way of 8 track tapes, so be aware
of that. Just giving some info, not saying that makes it a bad place.
If you stick it out for ten years, the stock options will make you a
millionaire and I'm not exaggerating about that one bit.

Name me another grunt job that gives you that. Getting rich has
usually involved hard work, although we tend to pay attention only to
the anomalies...

Hell, that's true of just about any place. Especially in this industry.

I think it also depends on whose butt the nose would be inserted. I've worked
at IBM, Dell, and now BMC Software, and not all persons in power like
brown-nosers.

Exactly! I kind of believe Dell likes brown-nosers by some subtle (or
not so subtle) things his employees do. For example, the email address
to send one's resume to at Dell used to be Goo...@dell.com. It may
still is, but I haven't checked it out lately.

Ah, butt the fine art<s> of brown-nosing is to be able to do it without
seeming to do it.
Really rich people know what I'm talking about. They have no real new
friends after getting their money because they have learnt that you can't
trust anyone.
Same with bosses. No matter how you cut it, a boss is a stupid lamer if
he/she actually believes everyone likes and respects them. If you are a boss,
who gives a shit? Its not a popularity contest. Just set fair rules, treat
everyone fairly, hire from within, and make your friends outside of work.
