Given that, and that half the mall seems empty, it more and more resembles the
mall The House of Scotch Tape was in on SNL...

several months ago i read that they were closing the ice rink and that the
mall was to be converted into office space. could this be why it looks so
deserted?
david
That mall has always been dead. The only thng worthwhile is the Oshmans.
As for the food at the mall, Swensons and Hooters were still alive and
well a month ago, but that was it.

Scruffy's Convenience Store/Lunch Counter on 6th street.
Best Gyro left in town, even better than Ted's. I had
another one for lunch today - awesome.
OBFoodCourts; they generally suck anyway. Take Highland Mall
for example - Best thing going there is the Cozzolis with the
potato place coming in second. Throw the rest of them away;
not good food or value.
-sw
It's been mostly empty for the last 3 or 4. Actually, most of the
food court was empty well before then. The smoothie shop lasted the
longest, but it closed a little after Cozolli's and Taco Arriba a few
months back.
The gyro place you remember was gone at least a month before that.
The owner moved out really quickly one weekend and I never got a
chance to find out what he was going to do. He was great fun to talk
to though.
Most of the vendors there were just like him - small family owned
businesses. It was the same faces each time, which was quite a
constrast to the typical mall vendor with 16 year old employees that
tend to stay for a couple months at most.

I'm not sure what is happening with that area. I talked to the lady
at smoothie store several times when they were trying to decide
whether or not to stay open. She said that they weren't sure what the
Mall was going to do in the future, but when the skating rink shut
down they knew they wouldn't have enough business to be able to stay
open long enough to find out what would happen.
The Cozzolis there was never as good as the one at Northcross. It's
hard to believe they are part of the same chain. The fries at
Gaylords aren't bad at all.
The only mall in Austin with good food is Dobie. And, now that
Northcross is gone, it's the only food court in town with any hang-out
factor. Dobie and Northcross were both places that I could spend a
whole weekend afternoon at. Come, grab a snack, read a book or do
dome work, watch a movie, hang out some more, eat dinner, play some
games, slack, slack, slack.
yeah, except that at cozzolis you have to charge a minimum amount to use a
credit card. which really sucks, especially if it's your MC/Visa debit card
that you're wanting to use.
david
well, according to google, the mall has changed hands a couple of times
since 1998.
http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/stories/1998/06/08/tidbits.html
"...Mall shopping. A private North Texas investment company has purchased
Austin's Northcross Mall.
Buyer Midland Red Oak Realty closed the deal June 2.
The 387,000-square-foot mall at 7835 Northcross Drive is about 78 percent
occupied, says Rodger Anderson, president of United Commercial Realty in
Austin. Anderson and UCR broker Chris Marchbanks co-listed the property for
sale with Tom Salanty of the Cushman & Wakefield office in Dallas.
The seller was Schroeder Management Inc., the manager and adviser of the
owner, Fund-A Northcross Mall. The fund had owned the mall since 1988.
Midland Red Oak officials could not be reached for comment.
The Midland-based company owns several retail and downtown office properties
throughout the state, but Northcross Mall is believed to be the firm's first
Austin acquisition.
Sources say the buyer paid less than the $18 million sought by the seller

"Midland Red Oak Realty has the listing to sell NorthCross Mall, a 302,689
sq.ft., 92% occupied mall in Austin, TX. The asking price is $25 million."
and i was trying to find something about the mall being converted to office
spaces, but i'm really tired, so i'm going to bed.

Yea, so the Swensons and Hooters were alive and well, but what about
food options?

Point taken, but in the skit, the rest of the mall was doing quite good.
PS: I've also had the same thought many times re certain operations at that
mall
Isn't the Furr's Cafeteria still open?
Yeah, I forgot that one. That was alive and kicking. Some
of their customers looked to be on their last leg though.

Brrrrszzzzzzt! Wrong!
Gamefellas! They rule, and last time I checked are actually doing quite
well, considering the crazy turbulence of the surroundings. They have two
stores at Northcross - one specifically for games and one for movie (VHS &
DVD) sales and trades.
And dude, you have obviously never been to Pipe World! That place is nuts.
It has great cigars and smoking accessories in addition to a dizzying
array of wacked out collectible figurines. (Can you say, "cognitive
dissonance"? <g>)
That Guitar Center seems busy whenever I go, and I believe the National
Comedy Theater is doing okay, too. And for some reason, everytime I am in
there (often, i have a teenager who loves Gamefellas), that wacky
"Recording Studio of America" has clients you can hear clear across the
mall. Also, I recall that when we (Chronicle - work) called Chaparral Ice
to find out why they were leaving (back when they had won yet another
"Best of" for Best Skating), they said that they actually didn't want to
leave and that they had been doing okay there.
IMHO, the mall management can't see the forest for the trees. Northcross
was the last of the human-sized, neighborhood malls (ala Westgate, Dobie).
Maybe acknowledging the neighborhood (many elderly folks and established
Austin families) and marketing to serve them could have been a viable mall
formula that might have turned profit, but that never seemed to be an
option. Supposedly, the brilliant idea behind the renovation is
office/conference space shared with retail. Whatever. Another silly little
bit of Austin coziness gone, which makes me sad, because as I said, I
spend lots of time there (and used to spend lots of money - Chelo Kebab! )
due to my kid's love of Gamefellas.
sad to see Northcross fed to the wolves,
kate
Thanks, man; good to know. Address?

I liked Teriyaki Temple a lot, so it's closed for remodeling. Sigh. Big
plate of spicy beef and/or chicken teriyaki, hold the mushrooms and veggies,
a big pink lemonade, maybe a couple of Godiva honey roasted almond truffles
for dessert... mmm.
It's between Brazos and San Jacinto, on the south side of the road.
I haven't been on 6th street for a while, but it seems those bars
are continously rotating tennants. I didn't relize there was a Hard
Rock Cafe there next to BW3 until yesterday (OK, OK, I had $.50
legs (on Wednesdays) as an appetizer to that Gyro ;-) Jamaican
Jerk Sauce Rules.
Scruffy's lunch/dinner offerings shut down for a breif period in the
early afternoon, but start up again around dinner. Don't let the
'decor' turn you off - it's basically a convenience store; sometimes
a shady character or two lurking about inside or out, but I know
the mailman eats thee and seeing people in business attire is
pretty common, too.
-sw
wow. does he eat you, too? or just others?
david
BEEEP! I'm sorry, you don't win the microwave.
In at least one of those skits, I remember someone talking about how business at
"Puppyland" was so slow that all the dogs were on "Cycle 3" dogfood (i.e., they
were no longer puppies).
The actual mall is closing down to be converted to office space, as someone
already mentioned. However, the Oshmans and the Hooter's are supposedly
going to remain. I'm sure those will be big incentives to move your office
to that location.
rj
So at least someone's using the old rink space. At least until the
season is over or the Knights follow the Northcross Mall into
oblivion.
