Hey guys,

Is this group focused mainly on the FP course, or is it a more general group? At quick glance it seems like it's mostly been about the course the last few meetups.

I just happened upon this group while reading HN lastnight. I do a decent amount of Scala at work here in town and I'd be interesting in chatting about it, but I'm not working on the Coursera class. Just curious as to what's up.

Happy holidays :)

The course was just a good excuse to start the group up - we've been
chatting about scala-related stuff in general. The course is finished
up at this point anyway.

Several of us work for Giganews, where we're doing a fair amount of
Scala, so we'd definitely be interested in talking with others who are
using it at work.

Not sure what people's availability is going to be like with holidays
coming up, but I'd be down for at least one more lunchtime meetup this
year.

I'm still interested in the hack day idea.  (especially the akka one)   I'm more than happy to donate my conference room time here at cospace on a weekend (or an evening when there isn't a class).

Sounds good to me.  What dates might work for people?  Wednesday evenings are generally bad for me, and I have a full-day event on dec 15th, other than that I should be able to make an evening or weekend hack day.

I'm out of town from Dec. 7th - Dec. 11th. I'll probably have some random travel for the holidays, but I don't know when, this far in advance. It sounded like people preferred a weeknight meeting, in which case I probably can't make it anyway; Monday is the only night I'm regularly free. Some Tuesdays and Thursdays might work. I could make time during the day on most weekends, though.

I don't want to derail the thread, but Norman, what do you think of cospace? Have you tried other co-working spaces? How does it compare, based on your experience, or what you've heard?

I have a friend who worked at Cospace for quite a long time. Apparently his favorite staff left for Capital Factory (downtown at the Omni) so he (and many others) moved also, and he likes it more there. I haven't worked at either so this is just heresay.

I can probably provide (lots of) office space downtown if anyone is interested in a weekend thing.

A saturday or sunday afternoon is ideal for me.  Trying to block off more than 2 hours on a weeknight can be tricky.   We are going to do a datomic hack day with the Clojure meetup some weekend in december, so I need to plan around that just to make sure I don't overbook my conference room time.  (not a real problem, since nobody really checks, but I like try and stay within my allotment)   It sounds like the 16th and 22nd/23rd are the most likely to work for everyone?

I don't think there's really a good coworking space in austin yet.  Cospace had a pretty good thing going for a while, but the guys running it have really let it go downhill lately.  It's still a good place, but if something better popped up, I would consider it.  Capital Factory is interesting, but it's way too expensive and very inconvenient.  (compare parking costs to a coworking membership somewhere - ouch)  They also don't appear to have 24 hour access, or at least I never see anyone there late at night.  And, of course, capital factory is really more focussed on startups than independent developers.  Conjunctured is small and parking has been a pain when I've gone there.  I have a couple of friends who work out of there and like it, but it doesn't quite fit my goals. Tech Ranch would be my most likely backup location.  They may actually be doing better than cospace now in terms of attracting interesting people.  I've considered switching, but I think cospace still has the advantage.  Another one I've looked at recently is Link coworking.  They have a really nice facility.  They are a little selective in who they let in, which I like, but they don't have the concentration of tech people that I think makes coworking so fun.

That would be great and would give us a lot of flexibility in scheduling.

I can make it most days. Weekends have the advantage of not fighting after work traffic to get somewhere..
