Trying to clear an airbag code on my old 1999 A4 (b5 series).  Thought I'd ask here...audiforums haven't been too helpful.

If you've got one, please let me know and I can meet you up anywhere.

Thanks in advance!
Jason

I have a Ross-Tech VAGCOM KEY USB cable that should work, if you have a laptop with Windows that can run the VCDS software.

Not me. Maybe Dave Crooke? Think he has an A4, maybe newer, though.

Regards,

Khib

My VAG-COM setup will work with this car, as will Mark's ...

If anyone is curious, VAG-COM is a $300 product from a garage startup company in Pennsylvania, USA that does everything that the official VW $6,000 dealer stuff does, and more. I am usiing VW to mean the company, not the brand, i.e. I am including Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bugatti, ....

For cars of that vintage, the cable looks like any old OBD-2 code reader, but VW exposes its "dual K line" proprietary CanBus interface over the "reserved for manufacturer, no connection" pins in the OBD-2 standard, so you actually have a full manufacturer CanBus hookup, it's just at 9600 baud :(

With an adapter, you can hook it up to classic VW's all the way back to 1982, when K line came on a 4 pin nconnector at 2400 baud (really).

Post-2009 VW cars have high speed CanBus access, but I have never used it.

Oh, and VAG-COM also does everything a $150 high end generic OBD-2 code reader does as well. And better. I have used it on my GT-R twice.

You have no idea how much I want them to do a NIS-COM :)

Cheers
Dave

Loading APR's full 1.0 bar ECU map in my A6 took over 2 hours :)

PS if you buy it, buy the original from Ross-Tech. Their "HEX-CAN-KEY-USB" cable has 4 functions in one:

1. Generic OBD-2 cable
2. VW dual and single K line access (1982-2008 models)
3. VW direct digital CanBus access (2009+ cars only)
4. License key dongle for the VAG-COM software

Any old beater laptop will work, any version of Windows. My VAG-COM laptop is 11 years old and has Windows XP Home Edition (updated from Win98)

FYI I ended up replacing my airbag controller module... total pain in the ass. But the cable came in handy diagnosing it was faulty and then afterwards to clear out the airbag light.  Once again the Austin GT-R group proving to be the most helpful bunch out there.  Owe you a pack of your fav beers Mark!

Thanks,
Jason
