The planned improvements are expected to address more than $60 million in
comprehensive crash costs suffered on Rutland Drive between 2018 and 2023. The project aims to reduce multiple crash types, including head-on crashes, by improving yielding and visibility and establishing physical separation
for motor vehicles from people walking, bicycling or using electric scooters.
Changes will also increase transit access to the high-frequency CapMetro Rapid 801 and 803 bus routes operating on North Lamar Boulevard and Burnet Road.
The street configuration will also provide trail connections from the headwaters of Shoal Creek at the south end of Neils Thompson Boulevard to points south and north, including the Shoal Creek Trail, Red Line trail, the Northern Walnut Creek Trail, as well
as other destinations such as Q2 Stadium and many North Austin neighborhoods.
