Overview

The City of Austin is evaluating Rutland Drive from Burnet Road to North Lamar Boulevard, as well as Longhorn Boulevard and Neils Thompson Drive between Burnet Road and Shoal Creek's headwaters, to improve safety and mobility for everyone who uses these streets.

Join the City of Austin at a community pop-up from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 28, at the south end of the Neils Thompson Drive. City staff will be on hand to answer questions and hear your thoughts.

The planned improvements are expected to address more than $60 million in comprehensive crash costs suffered on Rutland Drive between 2018 and 2023. The project aims to reduce multiple crash types, including head-on crashes, by improving yielding and visibility and establishing physical separation for motor vehicles from people walking, bicycling or using electric scooters.

Changes will also increase transit access to the high-frequency CapMetro Rapid 801 and 803 bus routes operating on North Lamar Boulevard and Burnet Road.

The street configuration will also provide trail connections from the headwaters of Shoal Creek at the south end of Neils Thompson Boulevard to points south and north, including the Shoal Creek Trail, Red Line trail, the Northern Walnut Creek Trail, as well as other destinations such as Q2 Stadium and many North Austin neighborhoods.

Learn more about this project at AustinTexas.gov/Rutland. There, you’ll find an illustrated map of the planned changes and a survey to leave feedback. The site and survey will remain open for comment through October 6, 2024.
