Hi everyone,

Many thanks are in order after the joint BAC-PAC meeting. Thank you for presenting, Kellee, Jason, Liane, Hannah, and Laura. And thank you to everyone that attended for showing up and being present. I hope this conversation had many takeaways for attendees both collectively as councils and individually as people living in the Austin community. Read on for all the links that were shared during the meeting.

Thank you Caroline for sharing this Statesman project:
For visual and auditory learners, there are 3 videos that are less than 10 minutes to watch in total and share stories from people in the Austin community. Also written content. Definitely recommend having a look.

Thank you Stephanie for sharing the following links:
https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/iupra/_files/pdf/those-who-left-austin.pdf (UT Report Kellee Coleman mentioned) - "Despite being one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Austin’s African American population has been in steady decline for nearly two decades. The discrepancy between Austin’s huge population growth and its decline in African American residents is greater than that of any other fast-growing major city in the U.S. Why are they leaving and where are they going?"

Thank you Aisling for sharing this project that maps racially restrictive housing covenants:

Thank you Jay for sharing the proposed bill in the Texas legislature to address equity in the Texas transportation decision making system, including a detail to erase the sentence that enforces "color blind"

Thank you Heyden for sharing the mapping Inequality website documents re: redlining across the country: https://dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/redlining/#loc=5/39.1/-94.58

Have a lovely day,
Briana

Learn about Austin’s Black history and raise money for a great cause through the Original Austin Black History bike ride.

Our goal is to get 500 Austinites to complete the route. If we reach our goal, SRAM will generously donate $5,000 to BlackHistoryBikeRide.com, helping fund more research and events in Austin and other U.S. cities.

This is a wonderful idea. I had to dig around on the website to find out dates. It looks like the rides had to occur and be logged in February to count. Is that correct?

Thanks for forwarding, Carl,

This is NOT the first Black history ride. Six Square did one in 2015, and Decipher City did two in partnership with Ghisallo Cycling Initiative in 2019. That information has been on both sites for over a year.. Please stop erasing the work of Black women.

HI Everyone,

Thanks for that amazing overview, Briana. I noticed that the video from the meeting is posted here: https://austintexas.webex.com/recordingservice/sites/austintexas/recording/09f519f82d694e6d92c3c0637433f89f/playback

Also, I recently saw the attached report on equity in transportation. It looks like it was created for the Smart Trips program and might have some helpful information.

Thanks much,

Heyden

I may have shared this before, but an interesting talk on transportation equity was presented as part of the Imagine Austin Speaker Series (http://austintexas.gov/department/imagine-austin-speaker-series ) as couple years back. Late to the conversation here but I really, really want to point out the error in calling Talib’s ride the first black history ride. I think it is necessary to call out and honor the work of Six Square and Decipher City, especially as active bike and ped advocates here. It’s great that he’s garnering so much media/attention but it’s deeply unfortunate to see the incredible work of black women unacknowledged. Please take a moment to read up on this 2019 Woven In Among Us bike ride and check out Decipher City's resources, including podcast episodes, while you're there. I cannot find info on the Six Square ride but here is a short blog post for your perusal.

Some more history of Austin Black History bike rides: I inquired with Eileen Schaubert, who was active in Austin several years ago, about the rides that she helped with.

She sent me this:
"From a quick check back, it looks like the first one [of their series] was in 2012. We did at least 2 more in 2013 and 2014. Each year in February there was/is an African American Heritage Festival at Huston-Tillotson. We piggy-backed on that event.
Lisa Byrd of ProArts Collective and the African American Cultural Heritage District and Harrison Eppright (Manager of Visitor Services -  Austin Convention & Visitor's Bureau) designed the stops/content. Harrison was our docent. The first year I think Lisa drove him between stops. Then Patricia [Schaub] was his pedicab driver on the other years - way more fun for everyone."

"Planning Education and Critical Practice: Reflections from Toronto" on Friday, March 26th at 3 PM EST/12 noon PST.

See details below & register here:

Event Description:
The Planning Program at the University of Toronto is currently conducting a wide-ranging internal review, including issues concerning curriculum, recruitment and community relations. The review coincides with organizing by students in the Department of Geography and Planning, who urged us to address anti-Black racism and other forms of injustice in our programs and beyond, in the wake of recent waves of police violence against Black and Indigenous peoples, and the historic political mobilizations by Black Lives Matter as well as Indigenous movements. The present conjuncture of Covid-19 within which the Planning Program review is progressing has further highlighted the complex totality of systemic oppressions within which planners work, in academic, professional and broader social contexts. Under such circumstances, we wish to raise the question: how must critical planning educators respond to urgent demands for social, cultural and ecological justice? To this end, we have organized a panel discussion bringing together the directors of three planning programs in Toronto. This Intersections event is organized by the Critical Planning Research Cluster and co-sponsored by Planners Network.

Speakers:
Luisa Sotomayor, Assistant Professor and Planning Program Coordinator, Faculty of Urban and Environmental Change, York University
Pamela Robinson, Professor and Director,
School of Urban and Regional Planning, Ryerson University
Katharine N. Rankin, Professor and Director of Planning Program, Department of Geography & Planning, University of Toronto

If anyone is interested we did a bike tour of the Six Square area with a view of seeing the history. I managed to catch some of it in a short video that I will post on YouTube and link if there is any interest.

I know that Patricia Schaub drove a pedicab on that tour.
