I've come across many disproportioned shields lately, especially the ones used to cover up the alpha-numerics:

The bottom one is OK, the top one is terrible. It uses the wrong font for the numerals - series D instead of series E. A pretty common error in Sydney unfortunately. The Metroad shields on coverplates are also wrong, compared to the older Metroad shields.

This sign is a good example: http://www.ozroads.com.au/NSW/RouteNumbering/Metroads/7/90.JPG

It looks even worse when they screw up and use Series E on route shields...

I took this one today. I didn't know there were service signs with route numbers but this one seems to be covering an alpha numeric sign only that it's wrong to have the green background around the shield.

Thats a fairly rare situation, where the only focal point for that route would be in blue. Stupid mistake with the coverplate colour, its not like its hard to change the colour in trasicad *rolls eyes*

I reckon the shield coverplates would just be mass produced in standard colours. They just pull one from the batch ad needed.

The sign on the other side of that one has the same coverplate.

I did see a fair while ago an M4 hexagon shield on a service sign (done properly) near Richmond Rd intersection but I think they removed it. I'll check again when I go past there.
