It’s been doing the same for me ...

Check this out http://g.co/maps/7qb8x

No matter how hard you try to change it, it simply won’t allow you show the Pacific Highway route – it seems to be blocked at two locations (Hungry Head Road and Clybucca).

Not only that – look at the directions on the left column – its actually directing you down roads that are _temporarily closed_

I tried going from becroft to ballina and it took buckets way, thunderbolt way and then various other back ways. I couldn't get it back onto the pacific highway.

I am stunned by the number of wrong route shields, road names and
place names on there. They need to get a dedicated and knowledgeable
staff member (preferably in Sydney, not California) to spend a large
amount of time fixing things.

Edwards Street in Coonabarabran is 2km long (at most) but on Google
Maps it goes 77kms to the east of the town!!

Someone (Brad?) told me that Google Maps now simply crowdsources their data - that way everyone can share their errors around!

How is Open Street Map? Since you can make changes directly when you
notice errors, does that tend to be more accurate and up to date, or are
there few Aussie contributors?

In my limited experience, it seems to be more accurate route marking wise, although still with a few errors around the place. I have fixed a couple but it's hard enough keeping my own website up-to-date so I don't have the time to be a larger contributor to it. The editing interface takes a fair bit of getting used to as well.

I really can't stand the visual display though - hopefully that can be changed sometime in the future.

I mainly use Google Maps for the aerial photography, cadastral information and occasionally for directions. I certainly don't trust their maps.

I think Darrin on this list does a lot of work on OSM so he might give us a few more insights.

I made a couple of submissions to Open Street Map. I do find it clearer to look at, but the route numbering setup they use can sometimes be restrictive.

iPhone users also have Google Maps as their default mapping program. I have since installed Whereis which is a little more accurate and seems to be updated more often. I would prefer to run Ausway maps, but their coverage is limited and I can't really justify the cost either.

Another WTF from Google Maps:

It actually makes perfect sense, as the Belmore River runs between the two roads. However, Google's data seems to be missing quite a few watercourses...

Also, I just posted that via the group interface, using Google Chrome, yet the link doesn't appear as a link. Scrap what I said before about Opera/Hotmail cooperation, must be something else.

A couple from down Mexico way.

- Apparently there's a TD21 which runs from the M80/SR8 junction down to Geelong then along the Great Ocean Road
- M8 has gone walkabout from the Western Freeway

Bizarre.

I've never seen it on any signs.

There are some tourist drives around the place that are signed reasonably well, as well as a couple of themed tourist drives (e.g. Goldfields Tourist Route). Perhaps Viseth can enlighten us.

I've seen that TD21 used in a few UBD directories. They also say that it goes on the Western Freeway to the M80 along with what you said below. Are tourist drives even gazetted in Victoria?

Tourist Drive 21 does not exist.

In all, there are roughly 60 tourist drives across the state - each of varying level of signage. Personally I'm not a fan of this numbering system as no one really follows them.
