So far there hasn't been much information regarding the route number for the new NorthConnex motorway (M2-M1 link). Hopefully the route number follows the logical plan below of assigning M7 to NorthConnex all the way up to the M1 as this will allow drivers to seamlessly continue along one route from the Hume to the Pacific Motorways. This will assign M7 as the official Sydney Bypass route, starting and ending at both points to which the main route breaks off towards Sydney. The Pennant Hills Road would continue holding the A28 number as this establishes the toll free alternative Hume-Pacific link

The M7 will carry along the M2 as a duplex. The signage at the Northconnex turnoff from the M2 will say "M7 - Newcastle. to M1"

What do you guys think?

I think its a great idea. Although RMS seem a bit strange on how they number routes.
I think what will happen is that it will be a different route number, which then defeats the purpose of having route numbers!

Alternatively, we may see M1 signposted along the existing M2, and North Connex, to the existing M1, making that the preferred route from Sydney to Newcastle/North, and having M2 start at Pennant Hills Road.

I wouldn't think so. The Northconnex joins the M2 with ramps facing west, meaning most traffic on the NC will be going from M7 to the M1. I think NorthConnex is more suited as a Sydney Bypass (Canberra - Newcastle) route rather than a Sydney link. Traffic travelling to the city from the M1 will still use the Pacific Highway, so it will continue to carry the A1

There was a signed duplex when the M7 first opened. But that quickly disappeared because of tolling confusion. Now all tolls are electronic, and all routes are alphanumeric maybe RMS will try it again. I mean, it makes logical sense, but your average punter is rarely logical.

I have always thought that the reason Pennant Hills Road is A28 is because RMS knew Northconnex was going ahead and reserved the M7 for it (combined with the confusion around M7 as a route number partially duplexing with M2 - this should be less confusing is M7 continues to Wahroonga).

If it is any other number it will really make no sense at all, and this isn't QLD :)

Just had a good look through the UDLP and there are road markings with "M1 T". What could the "T" stand for?

Interesting find!

I would suggest the T is an abbreviation for tunnel - when actually implemented it will probably be fully spelled out.

I wouldn't put too much value on it. There are numerous references to "M1 Tunnel" and "M28 New Road Name" in all these documents and animations, and in most cases they've been photoshopped out where they're particularly prominent. The RMS will almost certainly choose a route number that is not M1, because that would be really really stupid.

So, basically you're telling us it's definitely going to be M1 then?
