The NSW Government has committed to building a flyover at a dangerous
intersection on the south coast.
Key points:
The Government says it will build a flyover at the intersection of
Jervis Bay Rd and Princes Highway
More than 14,000 residents signed a petition calling for a flyover
instead of the roundabout option
A timeframe for its delivery has not been set but the work is expected
to cost around $100 million
Residents at Vincentia have been lobbying for years to improve access at
the intersection of Jervis Bay Road and the Princes Highway in a bid to
improve safety for motorists.
The Government had initially signalled it would build a roundabout at
the site, but on Wednesday Kiama MP Gareth Ward confirmed that position
had changed.
"The preferred option for the NSW Government will now be a grade
separated interchange," he said.
"We've been working on this for a long time and we have secured an
agreement from the Minister for Roads Paul Toole to proceed with this."
Delivery time unknown
The budget for the work is expected to be around $100 million but a
timeframe for its delivery is yet to be determined.
"It will come at a great cost, it will take longer to deliver because we
will have to undertake environmental assessments, there will have to be
a concept design, there will be public exhibition, public comment, but
we are committed to getting on with it," Mr Ward said.
"We've only just made the decision. We also need to acquire the land, so
it'll shock you to know that I don't have a date right now.
"But I would anticipate that we'll start construction in 2022."
Mr Ward said the improvements to the intersection would fit in
"perfectly" with the vision the Government has to upgrade the Princes
Highway south of Nowra, all the way down to the Victorian border.

A local petition calling for the flyover attracted more than 14,000
signatures and was delivered to the New South Wales Parliament in
September.

President of the Vincentia Matters community group, Liz Tooley, said
residents were "ecstatic" about the new plans.
"It's the best news we could have had," she said.
"This is what the community, a very united community, wanted.
"The flyover will be a new section of the highway and will allow JB Road
to empty safely and without congestion.
"That is the answer to all of our dreams."
It is hoped the upgrade will also help ease congestion at the
intersection during peak holiday periods, and in the case of an
emergency.
