With a bit of camera zoom, Sydney's newest motorway's route number has been revealed – it's the M8.

More photos to come.

Here are the rest of the sign photos.
  • A5.jpg: I assume this is an error?
  • M8-2.jpg: Sign facing northbound on the A3
  • M8-3.jpg: Eastbound on-ramp from the A3
  • M8-4.jpg: New set of traffic lights across the M5 and M8 motorways
  • M8-5.jpg: M8 on-ramp in the middle
  • M8-6.jpg: A3 off-ramp sign – not sure why they decided to leave out "Road" and "A3" from the coverplating - it was the same on another sign
  • M8-7.jpg: New A3 exit
  • M8-8.jpg: Wide-style signs
  • M8-9.jpg: Maybe an "END M8 – START M5" sign?
  • M8-10.jpg: The sign that gave away the route number (contrast enhanced to show what's under the coverplates) - facing southbound on the A3

I presume the ultimate plan is for the M8 to include the Western Harbour and Middle Harbour tunnels if/when built to link in with the A8.

Cheers,
Alex.

Interesting. Now really wondering what the focal points for the M8 are!

It looks like they had already settled on numbering it the M8 for a while. The version of the Road Rules from July 2019 already had references to the "M8 Motorway between the King Georges Road interchange, Beverly Hills and the St Peters interchange."

https://legislation.nsw.gov.au/#/view/regulation/2014/758/historical2019-07-05/part18/div1/rule3002

They still seem to be referring to it as the 'New M5' on marketing material, however.

Yep. Totally unexpected.

I thought the M8 was the Cross City Tunnel - I posted earlier last year about this I think, with a screenshot of my Linkt account transaction.

Well it would be interesting to see what route number (if any) the new Southconnex tunnel gets (if it gets built) from the now M8 to President Ave? If it's the M1, that would be a bit odd as it doesn't connect to the existing M1.

Were they calling this the "M6" tunnels? I guess with the "New M5" being called the "New M5" for such a long time, and then in reality it's "M8", then "M6" could really be anything now.

new m5 made sense to the general public in planning. having a specific route rather than "new m5" on signage also makes sense now that the project is close to opening and presuming as per previous posts the M8 route would be extended further north. perhaps the m4-m5 link might be routed as M8?

Id say as per Conrad's diagram (new M5, M4-m5 link up to the WHT, the WHT and the beaches link). I assume the rest of the M4-M5 link would just be the extension of the M4 east to the rozelle interchange. Perhaps they could extend the M4 onto the Anzac Br, WD and Harbour Bridge to to join up with the M1 (replace the current A4 route).

Focal points heading east are "Kingsford" and "Randwick" as per uncovered sign at King Georges Rd on ramp. I would have thought St Peters would be there

I'm guessing the signage is just temporary anyways. Once the M4-M5 link and WHT tunnel is done the focus points might change? Also, it'll be interesting to see how they change the signs for the airport once the Sydney Gateway is done as well, since they will both go to the airport.

I think the M4 M5 Link is going to be signposted as M8.

There's a shocker on the M5 East that was very recently installed eastbound for the Bexley Road exit. Looks like a normal exit fork sign, except the M5 route number is naked (i.e. without white border).

Hi all,

Took a few snaps from St Peters interchange today.

The sign covered in cloth has been up for a week. Opposite side is also covered and unreadable.

The other sign must've been installed in the last two days.

i still see it being congested especially until the sydney gateway/m4-m5 link is built so i don't think they'll be particularly happy to pay $6.95 each way with no cashback. the only saving grace is there is hardly any cars on the road but more and more are getting out there

Interesting how there's such a dearth of approved focal points for M8 before it extends to Rozelle that they have to dredge up Kingsford to put with Randwick - they're literally adjacent to each other.

If these are based on final approved signage that's pretty odd. You'd think Newtown or Marrickville or Alexandria could make the cut.

Quite a library of Autocad "stuff" they've pulled together for it. But they didn't model Australian traffic lights and I thought that was a bit odd!

one of the uncovered "if this variable sign is blacked out" is 90km heading west approaching the king georges rd exit. as far as i knew i thought 90 was removed by the rms years ago in their simplification of speed limits? so you'll be doing 80 in the tunnel, 90 out of the tunnel and then 100 once past the king georges rd exit.

I've just realised these are stub tunnels for the M6 extension. Until the Sydney Gateway is built I suspect there won't be too many people using the M8 unless you want to go to the Green Square/Alexandria area from SW Sydney.

There was a leak a few years ago from NSW cabinet of some documents which were shown to ABC and Fairfax journalists (presumably them putting the feelers out), including east facing ramps on the M5 East to link up to the F6 extension, but that was dumped before it was officially announced.

I assume the President Ave / Grand Pde route would work for linking SCX to Gen Holmes Drive, but if SouthConnex is mainly connecting to the M4 link and WHT, it would be silly not to number it to M1

Here's two more unmasked signs from the opposite direction. Looks like they took off half of the M5 East "TOLL" cover sticker before realising maybe they shouldn't have just yet.

The distortion is just a result of the lens setting I had on at the time. The two screenshots in this message were shot using the 'linear' lens, so you don't get the distortion.

I was using a GoPro as the dashcam.
