Hi Guys,

A couple of weeks ago I was checking out the displays at Geoscience Australia's office in Narrabundah here in Canberra and they have all the mineral displays and real time earthquake monitoring around the world, as well as a nice bunch of feature walls on building Canberra, and they have some excellent pix from the 60s and 70s when the feds were building parkways and expressways through the national capital. There's also pix of roads that no longer exist, and a few other bits.

I took some pix using my phone camera, and here's the highlights:

Some cool photos!

Kambah Road photo is interesting - I've been trying to work out where Kambah Road is/was. Best I can work is that it was Long Gully Rd/Sulwood Dr/Kambah Pool Rd.

Hi Sam,

Glad you liked the pix.

Long Gully Rd is on this 1971 map. I am not sure what mods it had to get to the stage it's shown as (ref: J18):

http://www.library.act.gov.au/reflectionscd/REFLECT/maps/1971c.htm

This 1965 map, shows an isolated rural road heading to Kambah Pool from Hughes, so I suspect this might be the road in question:

Interesting maps - thanks Paul. Seems like that must be it. Will have to find where I got the idea of Long Gully Rd and Sulwood Dr being part of Kambah Rd from.

No problems.

Long Gully Road used to be routed differently than depicted on the 1971 map.

I have an edition 1 of Gregorys and it shows both Kambah Rd and Long Gully Rd. Scan attached (ref: G7).

In addition to the attachment:

Weetangera Rd is now pretty much replaced by Belconnen way, Drake Brockmann Dr, Spofforth St, Kuringa Drive.
Coppins Crossing Rd is partially replaced by Coulter Dr
Kambah Rd is now mostly replaced by Isabella Dr, Drakeford Dr, Streeton Drive
Long Gully Rd is still in place around Symonston and Isaacs, but replaced by what I suspect is Yamba Dr and Hindmarsh Dr

Perfect, thanks Paul. That explains why I thought Kambah Road had something to do with Long Gully Rd, as I recall mention of it leading to Monaro Hwy.

No worries.

I've also found on foot the original alignment of what is now Kuringa Drive too. Still bitumen in the grass, old culverts and 1950s concrete reflector posts.

Is this it? (running towards the east)

I've been wondering about that myself.

Quite possibly, but south of the bridge on the spare carriageway there is bitumen before the cutting starts. Just small chunks, that increase in size when you get towards Owen Dixon Dr. Also in the same vicinity on current alignment there's a very very old culvert. The current alignment has a very noticeable tightening as you go around the curve too, which if you're not careful can put you on the wrong side of the unbroken line. I would suggest this is where the old route veers off onto the newer section.

Some time ago we spoke about old roads in the ACT, namely Kambah Rd and Long Gully Rd.

This blog post helps retrace the route through the modern suburbs

I also managed to guess looking at aerial shots that show the cycleways and former reservations I could work out a lot of the route for myself.
