New community update:

A significant change to the design since earlier this year is that the southbound Roe Hwy on-ramp will have a single added lane, with the freeway retaining three through lanes. The previous design had the freeway narrowing to 2 lanes with 2 added lanes from Roe Hwy. I wonder if this change suggests that the Govt is 100% committed to Roe8?

I think this is probably a more free flowing design for through traffic, minimising multiple merging actions.

4 lanes now open from Roe Highway to Armadale Road

Will probably head down for some photos next weekend.

From the signage that's appeared in recent weeks as they've come closer to completing the project it appears they haven't screwed any of it up this time around, unlike previous attempts in that area of the freeway (SR14 as Berrigan Drive for example).

A pleasant surprise :)
The signage installed with the recent widening north of Roe Hwy was awful, ditto the signage at Roe Hwy interchange when that was built a few years earlier.

Unfortunately the signage is rather disappointing. Three main issues:

1. There is no indication that Armadale Road is a two-lane exit on any sign. None at all. Never mind that AS1742.15 specifies full overhead gantry signage for two-lane exits.

2. They have done this weird thing on most of the signs where the SR14 shield is aligned with the 'Armadale Road' legend which makes it looks like Beeliar Drive is not part of SR14. Bizarre.

3. This stupid weird hybrid RD/Exit AD sign that says Russell Rd/Gibbs Rd exit is 4km away - same as the fvck-ups installed at Roe Highway exit. Another case of 'this sign doesn't actually say what you think it says'.

Anyway, here's some photos:

Roe Hwy/Kwinana Fwy interchange - no change yet

Entering Kwinana Fwy from Roe Hwy - originally planned to be a two-lane entry with the right lane merging with the third southbound freeway lane, the design was changed to the current single added lane

The old RD has been replaced and upgraded but helpfully placed behind a light pole (common theme in WA, must be in MRWA standards somewhere). A more competent designer would have included Bunbury on this sign - the sign it replaced dated from when the freeway ended at Thomas Road...

Standard WA Advance Exit sign assembly. Note the alignment of the route marker - it was done properly on the old sign (http://expressway.paulrands.com/gallery/roads/wa/numbered/stateroutes/sr2/02_kwinanafwy/02_northlaketothespectacles/southbound/images/201212_25_jandakot.jpg). The new signs here do not have the route name in a patch like some of the new signs around Gateway WA do.

Looking south towards Berrigan Drive

Berrigan Drive Exit Direction sign

New Interchange Sequence sign at Berrigan Drive

New overhead sign for Armadale Road. I don't mind this too much if this was a single lane exit, however it's a two-lane exit and that sign is telling me I need to be in the left lane! Also the arrow is far too small to read from a distance and the route marker is aligned wrong.

The worst of the lot. MRWA designer thinks this sign says 'You are on Route 2 Kwinana Freeway and the Russell Rd/Gibbs Rd exit is 4km ahead'. What is actually says is 'The exit in 4km is for Kwinana Freeway which leads to the towns of 'Russell Rd' and 'Gibbs Rd'. Overhead sign has the same problem as the previous sign.

Closer view of the overhead sign

Hidden behind a pole and just doesn't look quite right. Looking at the old one its evident the route marker is too small and poorly placed and the arrow is too big (http://expressway.paulrands.com/gallery/roads/wa/numbered/stateroutes/sr2/02_kwinanafwy/02_northlaketothespectacles/southbound/images/200712_28_jandakot_armadalrdrd_sr14.jpg)

End of the widening for now - 4th lane exits at Armadale Road and the 3rd lane ends just beyond. The widening of this section is due to start in the next month or so.

Good photos Sam.

I don't get why some of the old signage wasn't reused rather than rehashing, and stuffing things up with new signs.

Plenty of errors, I hope you'll be in contact with MRWA with corrections. Email me or FB message me if you want some amended designs done here that you can send to them. They would just be the colour images that I do, or I can do black and white outlined stuff such as those on the CAD drawings but without measurements.
