When did Australia stop using Yellow thermoplastic paints on main roads? Was the change for the price of yellow thermoplastic paint?

The time where used white and yellow for overtaking/lane separation was pretty cool.

Not sure but they brought back the yellow lines for a part of the Northern Connector in Adelaide as the white paint on concrete was a bit hard to see which i thought was interesting.

I went over the Punt Bridge on the Central Coast Hwy today and noticed that the white double lines were deteriorating and showing the yellow lines. I thought this was weird as the pavement on the bridge was resurfaced sometime in the 2000s.

Also, are there any Yellow line remnants?

Not sure if you got a direct answer to this Adrian, but we discussed this topic in 2011. The conversation coincided with the same question being asked in the SMH's Column 8: https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/column-8-20110520-1ewmq.html#ixzz1NGXXfigR

To paraphrase, local lore is that yellow lines started to be phased out in 1988 due to the prohibitive cost of cleaning out yellow paint drums if they needed to be filled with white paint. How true is it? Anyone's guess, but late 80s makes sense if you look at roads with yellow lines now.

Cheers,
Vincent

There are some remnants up in Darwin on the Main Street, Cavenagh St: https://www.google.com/maps/@-12.4632101,130.8437842,389m/data=!3m1!1e3 (drag the time slider back to 2017)
There's also a marking that says "ONLY" in one of the turn lanes up the street too, not sure if this is still standard in NT though.

I'm really not sure what the deal is with the yellow centrelines on Cavenagh Street. Better link here: https://goo.gl/maps/ip7E2K6Nsj2fd6P86

I have never seen anything similar elsewhere in the NT, and haven't come across any old yellow lines on abandoned/bypassed bits of road either.

Perhaps it was a City of Darwin oddity - they are responsible for the "ONLY" markings which are on the right turn pockets at the signals along Knuckey Street, and also on Bennett Street, for some strange reason.

There’s a video that Roads NSW posted in 2018 showing that they marked the Clarence River bridge with yellow paint on the Pacific Hwy at Harwood. https://youtu.be/WpaZ51PlQZE

I investigated further and found out this was a trial for road working zones. Looks to be for alignments that would be re-aligned somewhere else.

One interesting (and fairly recent example) of the use of a yellow centreline is on Crescent Rd, Hawthorn East, VIC: https://www.google.com/maps/@-37.8469067,145.0458079,3a,75y,12.18h,82.91t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sy_jCoLR9W6GrFc1QZsBCaQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

This is probably as good a place as any to tell you all that I relocated to the United States the week before last, based out of Washington DC for the next 3 years.

I haven't taken too many road-related photographs yet, but I have attached a couple of examples of yellow centre lines where I've found them. Not as abundant in the middle of the city!

Cheers,
Vincent.

Congrats mate.

DC is a wonderful city. I can't wait to go back there  one day for another visit. When I was there in 09, I found quite a few old signals about the place, I'd imagine they're all gone by now though.

Thanks Paul! Apologies, my last message seems a bit terse. I kept getting a notification from Google Groups that the message was too long, but I think that might have been because my attachments were initially too large.

I'm based at an international organisation (or "organization" in the local parlance) on assignment in my field of speciality, which is records management. I've been here for about a week and a half now and very much enjoying being a tourist in my own city, but still in the process of trying to find permanent living arrangements and getting all my admin taken care of.

Yesterday I took a trip out to Arlington cemetery, which borders the Capital Beltway. I spotted a couple of nice Freeway shields through the hedges - no pictures unfortunately, but I'll have plenty of opportunity to do that in time to come.

From what I've seen, all the signals here have been replaced with LEDs. The Americans do have a penchant for 3M traffic signals and it's always interesting to see them in action. I've seen a couple of 3M pedestrian signals which has been the bigger surprise - not sure if they've been installed deliberately or if they're a historic curiosity leftover?

Cheers,
Vincent.

All good! Hopefully your settling in well.

I've not been to the cemetery, but stayed in Arlington on my 2009 visit before shifting to just off Pennsylvania Av to extend my time there. It was just a few days, and used public transport for everything (damn it's good!) but took hundreds of photos of all the touristy things but loads of road related stuff too. When I was there, most of the old signals had been retrofitted with LEDs and most pedestrian signals had been modernised but there was still plenty of old incandescent signals that would pop up, curiously often in junctions that had already been retrofitted or updated. Also don't think I've noticed 3M pedestrian signals before, but saw several traffic lanterns instead.

I've still yet to edit and add the photos to Expressway from both the 07 and 09 trips to the US, but it will eventually happen I guess. A bit further delayed now thanks to needing to make the site mobile friendlier, given over 60% of my visitors are on mobile / handheld devices now.

I was incorrect about the Punt bridge pavement being resurfaced in the 2000s.
According to some birds-eye pics, the bridge and the approaches were repaved in the 1980s - https://portal.spatial.nsw.gov.au/download/historic/3371/3371_07_147.jp2.jpeg, then in the 1990s, the whole section was repaved again but didn't (for some reason) repave where the double lines are (here's what I mean - the Punt bridge), so they just painted it with white paint over the yellow. https://portal.spatial.nsw.gov.au/download/historic/4030/4030_12_179.jp2.jpeg

I do see some yellow paint peeking out the sides of the white paint on Campbelltown Rd.

I still can't fathom why they stopped using Yellow paint for the double lines. I know they said it costs too much to empty out the paint from the line-marking truck, but they use yellow paint for Clearway lines.

This short film from the 1950s has quite a number of shots where the double lines (and even some of the single lines) appear to be yellow. Also just a cool video on its own too.

In the Park Street case, my understanding is that yellow linemarking was used to indicate that it was to be a temporary 'trial' installation.
