Hi all,

Here is a sign I spotted in Warwick last week showing a STOP patch on the AD. Anyone seen signs like these before? – the traffic light AD’s in Macksville (Pacific Hwy) are somewhat similar but I wonder if this is an overkill or if its where transport departments might be going in the future.

Cheers,

Michael

It's probably some kind of measure to stop people running the stop sign.

Wouldn't work here in Dubbo, no one gives a shit about the road rules and makes them up as they go.

LOL David. I get the feeling it's a country driver thing.

I have lived out of the city for 10 years now, and whilst there's plenty of dickhead moves in Sydney and Brisbane, etc. It seems there's a lot of country folk who really struggle when they're not on the open road.

You can usually tell when the people from out of town come for their monthly shop.

Some of the regular things I see are:

  • Not giving way correctly at roundabouts
  • Not indicating at roundabouts or approaching intersections
  • Not stopping at stop signs
  • Not giving way to pedestrians on crossings
  • Turning to a side street or entrance from the through traffic lane instead of the provided turning lane
  • Doing u-turns in front of oncoming vehicles, seems to be especially prevalent on highway roads rather than minor ones
  • Pulling out into traffic with less than 3 car spaces between them and the oncoming traffic, forcing the traffic to stand on the brakes to avoid a collision
  • Using two traffic lanes on a multi-laned road
  • Running red lights at level crossings

Seems we have a really large number of tailgaters and road ragers here too.

"Hey Constable Jones, I know I didn't stop for the stop sign, but is that such a bad thing?"
"Nah mate, I'll buy you a beer up at the pub later on. I'll let you go on your way for now..."

Lol yes Paul – they’re all represented here too – there can be NO relaxation when driving in town J

You know it's a problem when you hear people from out town, from places like Warren, Bourke or Nyngan complain having to come to the big smoke (Dubbo) and find all the traffic here frustrating, and wonder how people could live the way we do in town.

The only time traffic has been an issue in the time I have been here is when the Mitchell Hwy is closed at the bridge over the Macquarie River.

If TMR can't stick to Australian Standards or their own guidelines, I don't suppose we could expect a Council too. It does look like a TMR sign though. Imagine that - someone asking TMR for expert advice on signage. The world is doomed.

Now I wonder what was wrong with the standard 'stop sign ahead' pictogram warning sign?

Country folk presumably can't remember what a red octagon symbolises.

Thanks for posting that, MG. Warwick really is quite the playground for interesting road signs, isn't it? Not bad for a town of about 14,000 people.

Who can ever forget the famous

sign? And the Burma Shave-style road safety messages along the New England Highway? And the yellow-bordered Stop and Give Way signs? And now this.

Is there still a picture of the vertical Sydney sign? I don't think I've seen it before!

And the other interesting signs?

I'll add to that one signalling right at a roundabout when going straight. I've almost exclusively only seen this in Armidale, save for a couple of scattered incidents in Wollongong/Melbourne.

Driving through Warwick (and QLD in general) is like a visual cacophony of crap...

Speaking of sign abortions. This was still standing on Logan Mwy (MR6) at Drewvale in Brisbane when I was there in April.

BTW, the exit is for Jutland Street. You have to drive through an industrial estate along Jutland and Battle Streets to access SR95, which according to Brisway is simply called Kingston Rd not Kingston-Beenleigh Rd.

If not for the nameplate error and that nasty Metroad shield, this would actually be a rather neat sign. Although I’d swap Logan Central and SR95 around.

The name patch is horrid. So's the positioning of the Metroad 6 shield (the 6 should be lined up with the centre of the stalk). Logan Central wouldn't fit below SR95 without widening the sign so I don't mind it in that arrangement.

This is an egregious mistake - it didn't just come with the wrong shields and wrong route numbers (like the ones at Tamworth) or the wrong colour, but they got the whole orientation of the words completely wrong!

I hope the council didn't pay too much for this piece of crap.

I'd say it was probably a deliberate design by TMR, probably a response to narrow median. Probably got an award for innovation!

Eastern Distributor had a couple too, I think?

Plenty of vertical 'KEEP LEFT' signs around Sydney too.
