This is just a band-aid solution. Extending left/right turn lanes are only going to make congestion even worse with queue jumpers clogging up the other lanes.

Typical example is Homebush Bay Drive south/M4 west right turn lanes.

What is needed is a fully grade separated interchange at these major junctions like the M7 junctions at M5/M4.

Grade seperated interchanges would be nice, but would be fairly hard to fit in that location.

Noticed the RTA have also put up something around Centenary Dr/Arthur St intersection as well:

No doubt it is a band aid but probably the best we are going to get at that location...possibly ever.

Agree about the driver behaviour issues - however, you can't design that out, it can only be eradicated through enforcement (police doing something other than speed checks? no way)

SPUI-ise the M4 junction?

In this case, the reduction in queue storage length might make a SPUI perform worse than a diamond?

Well my other suggestion was start closing turn directions at that
intersection and build a new trumpet interchange with the M4 stubbing
out to the GWH about 300m west of here. But now we're getting
ridiculous!

The problem with that area is that the M4 is too close to the Great
Western Highway for an effective SPUI to be constructed. Probably what
really needs to be done is something similar to the Homebush Bay Dr
interchange. Have a 2 - lane off ramp from both directions and have
the Cumberland Highway pass over the GWH. Or alternatively convert
Coleman street into a full interchange as it is roughly halfway
between Cumberland Highway and Church St.

Another interchange that needs to be fixed is the Silverwater Rd
interchange, the eastbound on ramp seems to be a bit short. Although
that probably can't be helped due to its proximity to Hill Road.

I get the same feeling about Silverwater Road but the merge lane is actually quite long - I think it might be the up-grade on the on-ramp which means it takes longer to get up to speed. There's little doubt that the merge lane should extend all the way to Hill Road though...

The Silverwater Rd eastbound on-ramp does seem a bit short when driving on it but it's not that short (it's just the line of sigh for merging it short + the slow cars who don't speed up).

Perhaps braided ramps for Silverwater Rd/Hill Rd? (but it doesn't help that the M4 is signed for Sydney Olympic Park).

Jason.

Speaking of cars that don't speed up, there's been a bit of controversy here because police have been setting up speed traps on freeway on-ramps, just before the speed changes to 100km/h. Rightly so, a couple of politicians have been complaining about it, saying its nothing more than revenue raising - which it is! I cannot believe, with all the safety problems caused by cars not speeding up appropriately on on-ramps, that the police would be pinging people for speeding a few metres before the speed goes from 60/70-100. Do they want people driving slower as they enter the freeway?!

That is very silly IMO. The whole point of on/off ramps is to allow time to speed up/slow down at a gradual pace (at opposed to suddenly). I always speed up to 90/100/110 on the on ramps where possible, especially the M7 to M4 westbound on-ramp (it's pretty hard to keep at 80 going down that hill).
