Question about the Morisset Interchange

So I noticed that the original freeway ADs on the F3 for the Mandalong Road (SR133) exit at Morisset did not include the SR133 shield for Mandalong Rd on the signs. Yet when the Morisset to Freemans Waterhole section of freeway opened in 1988, SR133 was extended to meet the freeway, and the original ID signs at the Morisset Interchange included SR133 on the  signs, however the AD signs on the freeway omitted SR133. It wasn't until c. 2010 that alphanumeric-ready signage was installed that included SR133 on freeway signage (albeit on coverplates over B53). Any reason why it took 22 years to fully recognise SR133 on the freeway signs?

Just one of those errors that hung around for a long time, and was perpetuated in the 1990s when the new ADs were installed. The off-exit signage first included SR133 in the 1990s - I can't recall an exact year but could probably go back through my old sketches and find them. The black signage which used to be at the B53/Freemans Drive roundabout - installed around the opening of the freeway - didn't include SR133 heading west to the freeway either, although there was one black ID with 'Mandalong/133' on it, not sure of its date (http://www.ozroads.com.au/NSW/RouteNumbering/State%20Routes/133/04.JPG)

A modern example would be the mess that is the western end of A43 near Branxton - there is no mention of A43 on the M15 at all and it is only earlier this year that signage westbound directs you to the M15 rather than through Branxton itself. Another example is no mention of B83 on the M1 southbound at Wahroonga interchange. These errors will probably hang around for years and the next generation of roadgeeks will wonder why :)

Interestingly, the northern terminus of SR133 at Sandage was also never signed properly as far as I can recall. These signs are all I can remember from the 1990s:

One thing that also bugged me forever about the Morriset Interchange was that southbound on the Freeway the 2km AD sign was always missing.  Not sure if this is still the case.

And yes - the signage at the western end of the M15 is appalling.

You are right about the northern end of SR 133.  Prior to the bypass/SH23 it was all signed correctly when SR133 ended at the Sandgate Rd/Vale St intersection.  Just reflecting, Vale St seems so small and quiet now - its amazing to think that it used to be the main north/south route (before the F3 was built west of the lake).  As a kid I can remember pretty big traffic jams through this area and Bluegum rd Jesmond.

Agree mate, Vale Street just seems so out of place as a former highway. If I didn't have so many years of memories using Charlestown Road between Hillsborough and Myall Roads I would probably feel the same way about that section too.

99% sure there is now a 2km AD southbound for Morisset interchange - that bugged me too!

I just remembered another current one that bugs me - all the southbound signage for the M1/M15/A15 junction still has no A15 route markers.

Also, does anyone else feel that the westbound signage on the A15 approaching the M1 is rather undersized / easily missed? For such a major junction the signage seems quite poor, and I see a lot of last second lane changes from people who are obviously not familiar with it. I think it needs a couple of gantries or at the very least cantilever the existing signs so they are much more visible.

overhead gantries would make sense and in my opinion are the easiest signs to see to know where you are going and what lane to be in. but nsw has always been slow in this regard - compared to victoria where it is standard practice.

you can see at that particular interchange on A15 west approaching the M1 on streetview they have a vms telling people sydney turn left. this remember is june 2015 a whole year after the hunter expressway opened. it might even still be there now?

Nihat is totally right with visibility and legibility with overhead gantries, especially those that use lane allocation arrows and the like.

When I first went to QLD in 1996, I first encountered them and was blown away by how useful they are. One of the things that generally speaking, Main Roads got right there.

Also northbound on the M1, both fork AD signs for the George Booth Dr/Newcastle Link Rd/Hunter Expwy omit any reference to B89 for the George Booth Dr exit.
