Hi all,

I'm currently working on a project and we're trying to work out the maximum length of address that our system should be able to handle. I know there's the Diamantina Developmental Road which comes in at 26 characters long, but are there any longer ones than that?

Cheers

Near me there is a local road called the Carragarmungee Estate Road, which is close at 24 lol

Hi Brendan,
A few observations.

You seem to be saying that your system never needs to store a foreign address, ever... (If it does, there are much bigger problems than the length).

Are you storing a postal address or a physical address?

Do you actually need to have a maximum length?

Possible Reading:
(https://auspost.com.au/media/documents/australia-post-addressing-standards-1999.pdf says "A maximum of 40 characters in any line in the address, including spaces between words, is acceptable,
i.e. lines must not contain more than 40 characters.")

(http://meteor.aihw.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/429747 says 45 characters for a "road name")

I reckon there would be a quite a few 'Place A - Place B Road' names that are longer than 26 characters.

Coolgardie-Esperance Highway is a fairly well-known name which comes close, as does Koolyanobbing - Southern Cross Road.

Yes, I had seen those docs. Our system needs to handle mainly Aussie addresses, but eventually will need to support New Zealand addresses as well (did a bit of reading on how they don't use suburbs on their mailing addresses, but rather the name of a larger mailing centre). We've decided on a maximum of 40 characters per address line because it's extremely unlikely we'll be dealing with anything longer, but I was just personally curious as to the longest possible address, in terms of character length.

Princes Highway East/Nar Nar Goon Connection Road.

This could be a contender. 43 letters + 6 spaces and the / slash. So 50 all up. Not much in the way of properties abutting it, but give it time.

Not much chance of abutting properties given that it's a former freeway - even Cardinia Shire wouldn't approve planning for a subdivision requiring driveways off that road. Besides, by the time development envelops that road it would have been incorporated into an extended O'Shea Road.

Cheers,
Alex.

I think you might have the wrong interchange. The connection road referred to on the sign in my picture isn't a former freeway. It connects the former highway / freeway with the Nar Nar Goon Road. South of the interchange looks ripe for subdivision.

Whoops, you're right. Confused it with the Pink Hill interchange.

Kangaroo Ground-Warrandyte Road = 29 letters

Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road = 25 letters

Murray Valley Highway = 19 letters

18 letters gets you
Tullamarine Freeway
South Eastern Freeway
Great Western Highway

At the other end of the scale, Werribee South has all five letters of K Road.
