Hi all,

On a recent trip from Mackay – Emerald – Rockhampton, I came across the Peak Downs / Gregory Hwy junction just north of Clermont. Not sure if anyone was aware, but the whole junction has been significantly re-routed since the opening of a mine where the old junction used to reside.

Refer to: http://goo.gl/maps/ikmF

You can see on the map (and zooming in to see the cadastre also demonstrates) that the Gregory Hwy (A7) used to continue south-east from the current junction. Essentially, what was once two highways with a nice linear path has now transformed into something complicated. Google Maps have seriously stuffed this up with “Peak Downs hwy” going all the way to Clermont. For those travelling from Clermont to Moranbah, it adds about 15km in length – none of the distance signs reflect the changes heading south-west from Mackay (which isn’t overly suprising).

Here are some pics of the old junction (taken in 2004):

Attached are pics from the new junction.

Peak Downs hwy34 – Facepalm. Route should still be SR70 with To:A7 in addition.

Peak Downs Hwy35 – Approaching Hwy terminus at Gregory hwy/Gregory Dev Rd

Gregory Hwy10 – northbound AD approaching PD Hwy.

Gregory hwy12 – southbound distance sign. Compare distances on this one to the link above, and note the background!

Cheers,

Michael

Nice pics, as always!

What's the stupid looking logo on the signs? Also, 'Belyando Crossing' as the northbound focal? Really? ffs TMR, you even showed Charters Towers on the wb AD.

Hey MG

Nice pix as usual mate.

The route number on all of those signs is way too small. Not mention the cock up Sam mentioned.

In saying that, these are more aesthetically pleasing than most signs prior to a couple of years ago in QLD

Yeah, that frikken "tourist" logo (I guess) wrecks the good signs.

Hi,

The logo is "the Mining Trail" - its some weird subsidiary route that links Sarina, Mackay and the Coalfields (Moranbah/Clermont). *shrug* why bother - just make it a tourist route or have nothing.

Belyando Crossing, with its one solitary building (being the roadhouse) is barely worthy of a focal point and agree it should be Charters Towers. Km plates on the A7 do however show BC but that doesnt mean its the focal point.

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks MG.

Charters Towers should be there as the second focal point at a minimum - what is retarded is 'they' saw fit to do it on the wb AD but not the more important nb AD.
