And another one added to the collection - the 472nd photographed since I started in 2004 :) This one is from our Tasmanian correspondent Peter Renshaw who is just back from a trip north... Pacific Highway approaching Chinderah Road at Chinderah.

Shouldn't that be M1?

Really it should be M1 all the way to Tyagarah.

I think that one has been there for a while, before RTA decided to make it M1.

The other exposed alpha-numeric nearby is also A1.

Makes sense then.

Why can't they make the signs look good aesthetically??? The A1 looks out of place, should've been in line with "Pacific Hwy".

The correct layout for that sign if there were no such thing as alphnumeric route markers would have had the NR1 shield right where the A1 marker is located. Maybe put it down to someone using a TraSiCAD (or however it's supposed to be spelt) template?

Cheers,
Alex.

The sign looks fine to me - the A1 is placed correctly according to the RTA design guidelines.

Some other states place the route marker adjacent to the road name but I personally don't like that style. However if it is compliant with their guidelines and done consistently then that is a good thing.

It's weird looking as the route number, road name panel and Ballina
isn't properly horizontally centre justified.

I understand and I can see that it's the correct positioning for the shields but it just looks a bit odd to me with alphanumerics and the straight rectangular border.

Here's one I just saw an hour ago on the M4 at Auburn, where the upgrade around the former plaza finished in westbound direction. Drove past there yesterday and didn't see it, so me thinks there's a coverplate with the MR4 on it somewhere on the ground below it. Might have to go for a hunt, would be a good souvenir.

Another nice find mate. I'm pretty sure that sign was coverplated when I drove past a few weeks ago so it must have 'come off'.

I heard the "MAB Project" mentioned at my Induction Day today. I was hinting at the fact that every time I hear anything about alphas at work, the actual term used is MAB.

Yeah that's one of the nicknames internally. Like the Vic conversion was called the 'Statewide Route Numbering Scheme'

They'll have to give it a new name if they introduce C routes :p

Is it a new sign (within the last 2 or 3 years)? The sign looks different from the Google street view imagery.

Did you mean if it was the recent one from a couple of years ago? Then no, it's not the same one, although that one was an alphanumeric [or MAB :-) ] also but they've replaced it since. I think it happened when they were completing the realignment of the M4 there. The same was done on the opposite direction. The new one looks much nicer and neater.
