Hi everyone,

I have collated, for your etertainment, a selection of facepalm moments, brought to you by Main Roads Western Australia. It would appear that, in this respect at least, the west is not lagging too far behind its eastern counterparts.

To begin, I present you an arrow pointing the wrong way - NR1 actually turns right here (southbound off-ramp from the freeway at Leach Highway, Bull Creek). Amusing thing is that there is another trailblazer assembly on the right hand side of the off-ramp that is actually correct! bahaha

Here we have another incorrectly installed arrow, however this one is a bit more obvious due to their being NO ROAD TO TURN RIGHT INTO *smacks forehead* (Wanneroo Road at Gnangara Road)
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_2609.jpg

This time we have the shields right but, for some reason, someone thought that black-on-white looked better than white-on-blue? (Ocean Reef Road at Wanneroo Road)
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_2583.jpg

In this example, some clown thought that a National Route shield would look better instead of a State Route shield... (Tonkin Highway, southbound off-ramp at Roe Highway)
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_2986.jpg

Down at Henderson, SR12 (Cockburn Road) was deviated around the new port development via a short section of Russell Road...somebody left out a SR12 shield!
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_3220.jpg

Yet they fixed this one at least, only 1km further down the road...
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_3223.jpg

On the Kwinana Freeway, I bring you the elusive double facepalm - southbound approaching Roe Highway. God knows why the top exit sign refers to the freeway (and wonder what's under the coverplate?) and SR14 is NOT Berrigan Drive...
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_0950.jpg

Spot the incorrect focal point...
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_3073.jpg
(Here's a clue, Stock Road heads south to Rockingham...)

And then, at Hamilton Hill, I bring you the mega facepalm!

SR14 runs from Armadale to South Fremantle, heading through Hamilton Hill along Forrest Road and Rockingham Road. A couple of years ago, the City of Cockburn (lol) placed a median in Rockingham Road to ban right turns from Forrest Road into Rockingham Road. Traffic destined for Fremantle now has to turn left into Carrington Street, then right into Rockingham Road. Council or Main Roads (Main Roads is responsible for all direction signs, so I assume it is them) installed a direction sign at Forrest Rd/Carrington St intersection to tell people to turn left...what they didn't do was update SR14's route...here's the story now...

SR14 straight ahead...OK...but why is that sign telling me turn left to reach Freo?
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_3077.jpg

I'll follow SR14...but when I reach Rockingham Rd, I can't turn right. Some genius realised this and flipped the arrow on the trailblazer, pointing traffic to turn left towards Spearwood...
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_3097.jpg

So then you turn left onto Rockingham Rd and then what? Signage disappears, you're heading the wrong way (but conveniently straight towards Council's offices to complain)...

As a bonus facepalm, I bring to you this AD sign, heading southeast on Rockingham Rd approaching Forrest Rd. Now SR14 turns left, and the ID sign confirms this, but it has been omitted from the AD for god knows what reason...

Hope you enjoyed!

At least the signs themselves aren't fugly. When both the content and
layout is wrong (i.e. every sign in Queensland) it bugs the shit out
of me. If it doesn't work at least make it look good!

I bet MRWA doesn't use TraSiCAD.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for making the time to post - nice pics and summary. Are you
spending a bit of time in WA these days?

As for the face palms, Im with Trent. From what youve shown and from
what Paul has presented on Expressway, the signs in WA are at least
consistent, well presented, have correct route numbering and (nearly)
always accurate.

I like to think my tolerance is pretty high with sign standards, but
driving around in QLD, you get constantly bombarded with ugly signs &
coverplates, inconsistency, stupid mistakes and a horrible route
numbering scheme.

I know its all about cost benefits and tax payers $ but I am so sick
of seeing coverplates. It would be somewhat palatable if at least the
coverplates blended into their surrounds but its rarely the case.

Michael
