Interesting "birthday present" from VicRoads...
Why MR87? Because it's part of the old Mornington Peninsula Fwy
corridor. After 1970s cutbacks to plans, the corridor was retained
from Warrigal Rd (opposite South Rd) to Springvale Rd (near Wells
Rd). You can see this in Melway #10 (1977). And of the two
sections of MP Fwy we saw built, one was signed at F87... the
intention being to link them... but we saw F87 replaced with MR11
and then M7 (never used on signs) and M11... but historically, it's
been route 87.
To be honest, I think it's a mistake. You guys might remember
someone who used to pop up on Wikipedia, who claimed for a long time
that the Dandenong Bypass would be signed as MR86. I'm inclined to
believe that it was going to be, but scrapped due to VicRoads
uncertainty over what would get built and what wouldn't. Well,
consider this: as an east-west route, it should have been signed
with an even number, e.g. 86. MR49's declaration in 1999 put the
spanner in the works for MR86 - when the Dandenong Bypass was
completed from Westall Rd Ext to South Gippsland Hwy, it continued
MR49.
As a E-W route, it would have made more sense to recycle an old
number (MR64).
Another thing I wouldn't have done is move MR14 from Warrigal Rd and
Kingston Rd onto the "Dingley Hwy". Not really a fan of losing a
duplex where it just creates another.
Cheers
