Hi,

Just wondering if anyone out there has or knows where I can get old Perth street directores, maybe 80's or late 70's that I can have or buy?

Hi James,

That will be tough. When I lived there I scoured bookstores left right and centre and the best I could do was a 1980s Explore Australia and a 1990s WA Country Towns UBD. That was over a period of 2 years.

Maybe Sam has some suggestions. If I spot anything when I am over there in a few weeks time I will grab it.

Perth ones are rather rare aren’t they? The only ones I’ve ever seen are the modern UBD ones from 2004 and up.

I have had a very small amount of success at various op shops. Not much luck in 2nd hand bookshops. There definitely isn't a reliable place to find them. Except at the state library, if you're only interested in looking...

I own a circa 1983 26th edition Perth UBD. Bought it for $2 from a second-hand bookshop on lower Crown Street, Wollongong about 10 years ago. I even have it with me here on my bookshelf. I'm gently caressing it on my desk as I type. And no. You can't have it. :)

A lovely ad on the very first page when you open the cover (the key map is on the inside front cover on the left):

"Perth Building Society Branches provide almost every service you'll find at our Head Office. And they're staffed by PBS people. Our Cashcard Teller Machines let you withdraw or deposit 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week. And they're conveniently located at selected Branches & throughout the metropolitan area."

Oh for the days when:

* ATMs only operated at certain hours
* AM and PM had full stops after each initial
* The word "branch" when referring to financial institutions was capitalised

There are maps up the back of various university campuses; Curtin Uni is still the "W.A. Institute of Technology". The City of Perth is undivided and goes as far south as nearly Welshpool and west to the coast. Mitchell Fwy is open as far north as Karrinyup Rd, Kwinana Fwy as far south as South St. The Graham Farmer Fwy wasn't even a twinkle in the eye of its chief engineer.

I'll gladly help you with any enquiries or research you want to do. Please feel free to e-mail me off board. But I'd love to know the date of publication -- I can't find it anywhere in the directory!

Similarly, I have a 30th edition UBD dated 1987 - no sure if its too late for what you are looking for.

I am happy to help out with any queries, even scan a few pages if needed.

Conrad

I used to have most years of UBD from 1977 up to about 1997 but I think most of them got thrown out (whyyyy)
I thiiiink I still have a 1977 and possibly 1986 and 1988 at my parent's house, will have to check next time I'm there

I also have a 1964 lands department street directory and a guide to the kwinana freeway from when it first opened in 1959, am happy to scan from those if you like

I've kept part of my promise (at long last) - here's scans of the kwinana freeway guide: http://imgur.com/a/DR46e

scanning the 1964 street directory is going to be considerably more effort, will post here once I get around to that

in the meantime I have my 1986 UBD which I'm happy to scan from if there's anything in particular you're after

Thanks mate, great stuff. One might say that plenty of Perth drivers need to read some of the basic instructions in there even today :p

Would also be handy to have the Bickley Street entry or similar today - no northbound access onto the freeway from Canning Highway to Judd St can be a bit of a pain.

For James, while in Albany over Easter I picked up about a dozen old street directories and maps of various ages from a second hand place on Albany Hwy near the Good Sammy. Left a few things behind but nothing too interesting :p Moral of the story is just to keep looking in op shops, 2nd hand bookshops etc. and sometimes you find something.

The stuff I left behind was mostly 2000s era Perth street directories I already had or 1970s/1980s australian road atlases which I already had similar. If that interests you, I'd definitely recommend going there...

Amazing brochure. So many things to remember :) That whole weaving lane thing would've had the smash repairs rubbing their hands together...
