I just found this:

It has a demo of the Australian Standard 1744 font at the bottom of the page, which is something I've been looking for quite a while. While it's not time limited, it's limited to capital letters only.

Every other font I've found and tried to use with Trasicad is too small or has some odd spacing - this works perfectly, albeit being limited to capital letters.

Here's a sample:

Uber nice find!! Time to see what makes this font so special, so I can sort out the spacing issues when moving objects in Trasicad. Will open it in Fontographer in next few days. If I can adapt the VADOT fonts I have (which do weird spacing things in Trasicad) then we're onto a winner!

Does the roadgeek font series not quite work properly?

No, they're worse than the VADOT ones that are spinning around on the net. The second you move a text object with either font, all the spacing disappears and all the letters overlap each other.

hmm I see what you mean. Even using the RTA [demo] version I can't get the signs to look right.

Is there a way to align elements of the sign with other elements? e.g. make a route marker centred vertically adjacent next to two focal points? Or is it all manual?

Using the Roadgeek fonts I can't even get the basic route shields to look right. The numerals look too short.

Maybe the full version works better?

What I noticed was that the Australian Standard font is significantly larger in terms of original size than other alternative fonts out there. I'd be guessing the vertical height of the font has been enlarged in the Australian Standard.

These might all help - they seem to be official FHWA fonts, but are about half the size of the Australian Standard fonts when you look at them through a text viewer.

Not sure those work either - see attached.

TraSiCAD is telling me I have a 160mm high numeral but it doesn't actually appear to be 160mm high in the viewer.

Correct - they probably aren't compliant to the Australian Standard, which probably specifies the size of the font, meaning it's physically too small for Trasicad. If the font file is modified, it can quite possibly work, but I can't get my head around font editing programs. You should also try out some of the other Highway Gothic fonts.

I've modified the font file so that there are lower case letters. Hooray!

Unfortunately, it doesn't match the Australian Standard precisely and Trasicad doesn't seem to like letters like p, j and y. They get cut off. I think it's good enough for making sign mock ups, but I'd still love to get my hands on the real thing. Anyway, from what I discovered, the Australian Standard font's height and width are 1.74x larger than the other fonts available.

Hallelujah! I've found the problem - I didn't correctly set up the ascender and descender limits. The font now works perfectly in Trasicad, upper and lowercase letters.

No worries - you just have to change the font settings in Trasicad.

Go to Tools > Options...

Click the "New Signs" tab

Then, you have to modify all of the default fonts for each sign type, selecting the AS1744 font (which should be just below Arial).

If the RMS was only willing to scrap that left lane turning right on to the M4 at Concord….and have a proper sign for it!

Hi Paul
Would it be possible for you to share with me the AS1744 E Modified font and other AS1744 fonts you may have? Thanks
