Hi all

I’ve only started using Old Windsor Road from Northmead to Norwest/Kellyville in more recent days – and am impressed by the 80 km/h limit all through this section.

However, given SR40 was routed via Windsor Road in days bygone, presumably Old Windsor Road was not as important a thoroughfare as Windsor Road would have been some years back.

So my questions:

·         What was the condition of Old Windsor Road between Northmead (A28 junction) and Kellyville in the years prior to SR40 being rerouted, and perhaps more importantly, before the NW T-way?

·         Did the NW T-way construction bring benefits to Old Windsor Road, i.e. road widened as a result of NW Tway construction

·         What would’ve been the speed limit prior?

I guess I could ask similar questions of Roberts Road, Centenary Drive etc before Metroad 3 was gazetted and replaced SR33 as the major inner north-south thoroughfare.

Thanks in advance J

Come on Hubert, all you gotta do is read Ozroads:

Basically in progressively deteriorating quality from Northmead to Windsor Rd junction. The route was borderline untrafficable between Sunnyholt Rd and Windsor Rd as late as 2002. Some of the T-Way is build on the original carriageway.

I grew up  2 blocks from Old Windsor Road in Wenty (now Constitution Hill), so I know this road very well! This is what I can remember...

What was the condition of Old Windsor Road between Northmead (A28 junction) and Kellyville in the years prior to SR40 being rerouted, and perhaps more importantly, before the NW T-way?

It was mostly dual carriageway from Hart Drive (Cumberland Highway) to Seven Hills Road in the 1980s (pretty much what it is today), with the exception of the Toongabbie Creek crossing near Gibbons Road. Past Seven Hills Road, it was essentially a glorified goat track but with Norwest and Glenwood, it gradually got upgraded through the 1990s and 2000s to what it is today.

Did the NW T-way construction bring benefits to Old Windsor Road, i.e. road widened as a result of NW Tway construction

From what I can remember, the T-Way came in after most (if not all) of the upgrades, but it still required the construction of the flyovers at Cumberland Highway and Abbott Road. When the Old Windsor Road / Seven Hills Road intersection was upgraded from a roundabout to lights in the late 1990s / early 2000s, I think there was an overpass constructed on Seven Hills Road, and an area excavated on both sides. This was for the future T-Way. On the western side of Old Windsor Road between Constitution Road and Fitzwilliam Road, there were a line of houses that were demolished for the T-Way. Constitution Road was also closed off to a cul-de-sac.

What would’ve been the speed limit prior?

I'm sure it was 70km/h from Cumberland Highway to Abbott Road, and then 80km/h to Windsor Road.

FWIW I was up at Parklea/Acacia Gardens quote a lot in 1996. Sunnyholt Road and Old Windsor Road were in the process of reconstruction. In late-ish 1996 reconstruction of the junction of Sunnyholt Rd and Old Windsor Rd was completed. It was kind of odd because the junction is of the same proportions that it is today (minus T-way of course), but north of that point Old Windsor Rd basically didn't exist. So there was this massive interface to the junction and a narrow undulating 7m roadway just a few dozen metres north.

There was a load limit on OWR between Sunnyholy Rd and Windsor Rd. There was also a giant roundabout on OWR and Seven Hills Rd.

I was quite curious to know what this road was like as well prior to the upgrades, especially the section north of Sunnyholt Road and also the original Windsor/Old Windsor Road intersection (does anybody have photos of this?)

From what I’ve gathered from annual reports, the Seven Hills Road roundabout was dropped in during 1984-1985, before being upgraded with signals in October 1991. Later on it was redone completely. The Sunnyholt Road junction was upgraded in November 1995.

I've been looking around for photos, etc. and this made me giggle.

They ended up pile driving through this section to build the T-way and that overpass!

That view is looking south from what is now Norwest Bvd and is still fairly similar - just a wider pavement

This part I recall well - my dad used to occasionally work at the Telecom exchange on the corner of Old Windsor/Windsor Roads. No photos unfortunately.

As Davis recalls, the section north of Sunnyholt Road was no greater than 7m wide and featured a dog-leg crossing of Caddies Creek. This crossing was flood prone and would be inundated regularly - as you can imagine, the surface was quite poor. When it was two lanes, I recall the section of Old Windsor Road north of the Seven Hills Road roundabout designated with a 70km/h speed limit.

Another question: Was the Old Windsor/Seven Hills Road roundabout the first to be fitted with traffic signals? (The signals were only operational during peak periods to my recollection). I know of Miranda Five Ways and (more recently) Illawarra/Princes Hwy roundabouts having such a system in place.

The roundabout intersection of Bungaribee and Flushcombe Rds in Blacktown are controlled by traffic lights although they are only pedestrian activated.

Newcastle Uni roundabout has them, as does Central Coast Hwy/Karalta Rd at Erina. I reckon OWR/SHR was possibly the first though as I seem to recall a small fuss being made at the time.

In case anyone was interested, I'm pretty sure that's the old section north of Sunnyholt Road.

I'm pretty sure that's looking north from Meurants Lane. The sign not facing the camera would say 'No Right Turn' as I remember right turns being banned into Meurants Lane until the new southbound carriageway was built.

I always forget about Meurants Lane as its kind of hidden away now. Its amazing how much its changed since then! This is the T-way now I think.

Yeah, it’s the T-Way.  Kind of strange that a narrow rollercoaster is now a busway.

I should declare a pecuniary interest here as I live in the vicinity of the Old Windsor Road T Way.
