Greetings,

According to the RTA website -
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/constructionmaintenance/majorconstructionprojectssydney/bangorbypass/index.html
Part of the new road will open to traffic in early December.

I think the opening date is this Thursday 16/12. I was driving on
Alfords Point Road tonight the VMS has the following message:
'New Illawarra Road
Changed Conditions
THU 16 DEC
Expect Delays'

I took a detour to Barden Ridge tonight and saw part of the new Bangor
Bypass between the roundabout at Old Illawarra Road and Marsden Road
has the completed line marking and landscaping. The speed limit on the
new road is 60 km/h (I think it will be 80 km/h when the road is in full
operation). The street lights have been installed but were off tonight.
No new road sign on the new road yet.

Traffic lights have also been installed at the intersection of Australia
Road and Ella Avenue as well as the roundabout on the corner of Old
Illawarra Road and New Illawarra Road, just outside of Menai Anglican
Church and Lucas Heights Community School. The traffic lights haven't
been activated yet.

The paving work for the new Bangor Bypass between Old Illawarra Road and
Recreation Drive is underway.

I will try to get some photos in the next couple of days, if I can get
my camera to work, it's been stuffing up lately.

Michael

Sounds very exciting, can't wait to see the pix.

Some good deals on cameras going around at the moment. In fact I think there's someone on AH who is still selling their Sony camera.

The opening of the new section was delayed to tomorrow. I got my other
camera working and took some photos of the new section in the last
couple of days.

The new off ramp to Barden Road on the Bangor Bypass will also be open
tomorrow. I believe Barden Road will be closed to Old Illawarra Road
towards Menai when the new section of the road is open.

Good stuff, thanks Michael. Are you heading back in the next few days to check it out?

I wonder if any new direction signs will be installed? It is not like there's any significant junctions. Alas, little chance of an A6 :p

Has any work started on signalising Heathcote Road/New Illawarra Road intersection?

It has been signalised for a while.

Any new signs installed with the signalisation? I haven't been down there in at least 6 months, if not longer.

From my dodgey rain affected pics the AD sign on New Illawarra Road has been replaced with a similar sign ommiting Heathcote.

The only signs they've put up are the temporary yellow sign but maybe when the construction is completed, they will put up new road sign? I'm keeping an eye out on the A6 sign too.

I will see if I can go down today to take some photos. Heathcote Road was signalised about 4 months ago, will try to get some photos if I'm down that way in the next couple of days.

From memory they have reused the 'Liverpool' directional sign towards Liverpool but the Wollongong/Heathcote sign was replaced when the signalisation work was completed and Heathcote was indeed omitted. It comes with a MR6 coverplate covering A6.

That would be correct as I also have a dodgey rain affected pic of it.

I might also be able to get some pics on Boxing Day as I should be going down south then.

I drove down to get some photos today. Unfortunately the battery in my camera died when I was about to take the photos coming back from Lucas Heights, so only southbound photos.

It starts from the intersection of Bangor Bypass and New Illawarra Road to the intersection of Old Illawarra Road and New Illawarra Road. The traffic lights were switched on when I was driving back from Lucas Heights. The street lights were still off as of tonight. Only one lane is open to traffic in each direction. The speed limit is 60km/h.

The new ramp at Barden Road to Bangor Bypass was opened today. Barden Road is closed from Bangor Bypass to Carter Road/Australia Road as of today. There is a new road sign (Barden Ridge) on Bangor Bypass points to this off ramp.

Works on the second half of the Bypass (between Old Illawarra Road and Recreation Drive) is still underway. I don't think it will open by the end of the year as scheduled.

I also drove down to Heathcote Road today to take some photos of the new signalised interaction.

The alpha signs were installed prior to the completion of the signalisation but I think the sign in DSCN7373 were installed around the completion of the work. As per my the previous email, the Liverpool sign was not replaced.

By the way couple of months ago, the RTA has also replaced a couple of old SR45 signs around Illawong and Padstow Heights. I will try to get some photos of them when I return from my holiday next month. There aren't many old SR45 signs left, I think the one at the intersection of Fairford Road and Watson Road, Padstow is the only one left.

But funny enough, this sign was replaced, with MR5/6 on coverplates.

The duplication work of Alfords Point Road northern approach is well underway. The new bridge across Henry Lawson Drive has been connected and is being paved. The new roads are being concreted at the moment. I will keep an eye out for any A6 sign. I will also try to get some photos when I return from my holiday next month.
