Hi guys,

I've been taking a look through Fairfax's photograph collection which is available via Getty Images. There is a lot of gold as you can imagine, a few highlights from me:

There are plenty of others. I've been going to the Getty Images website and searching for "Fairfax Media" (https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/fairfax-media?assettype=image&phrase=fairfax%20media&sort=mostpopular&license=rf%2Crm), and then adding whatever suffixes I can think of (highway, freeway, etc.). The metadata is pretty good, it has its fair share of typos but it's otherwise generally good.

Happy searching!
Vincent

So many good finds. Speaking of typos, it's Pearce's Corner :) They messed that up too.

That image of the Ryde Rd intersection is how I remember it in the 80s and 90s, though with updated signage.

I'm feeling very tech-illiterate as I cannot get any of those images to appear when searching via your link. Do you need to create an account and login before it will show you the old Fairfax Media images?

Pearce's Corner! That's what you get for blindly writing out someone else's typo ;)

I'm sorry you couldn't access the links Sam! Maybe try searching from here? https://www.gettyimages.com/search/2/image?family=editorial&phrase=Fairfax%20media - you don't need an account to search and browse. I didn't, at least. I searched for "Pacific Highway" for the first two links, and "Great Western Highway" for the second two.

Cheers,
Vincent.

Apologies guys, I'm not sure what's happening here. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the images aren't accessible in Australia?

Anyhow, I've attached the photos I linked to. Enjoy!

Thanks Vincent, that was the problem. Used a VPN to connect via an American server and it worked like a treat. Despite that, the direct links you posted worked fine. How odd.
Some great finds!

Some more Getty Images goodness for you all:

- Pre-metric signage in the background of a photograph showing Warringah Expressway construction progress, ca. 1968;
- More pre-metric signage on the north side of the Harbour Bridge;
- An interesting lane configuration photo from (I think?) Military Road, the story was about the implementation of the Transit Lane.

Cheers,
Vincent.

That Military Road sign is rather unusual; a very wordy way of communicating that information.

I vaguely remember seeing that lane allocation sign or one similar to it, in the 80s as a kid. I think I prefer the diagrammatic signs we use now for that kind of thing.

Nice finds too!

Getty's an odd one. When googling things over the years I've seen many a good photo appear via Getty, but found it impossible to actually access the photo or search for more. Never thought to try the VPN idea as I just assumed their site wasn't very user friendly, or that they just didn't like people searching through their archive with ease. I definitely recall a few of Laurie Brereton (boy did he get around in his time) opening things like the Granville Viaduct and the F6 at Yallah being on Getty.

Hey Paul,

Give the VPN a go - I think Sam was having the same issues until he connected to an American VPN. Apologies, I didn't realise the Getty link would be a bit of a can of worms!

Cheers,
Vincent.

I can't figure out where George street in Hornsby wouldn't have been signposted as NH1. My assumption is that it's this intersection: https://goo.gl/maps/ME1oXfBpUxeoDXvy8, but in the Fairfax image, the Pacific Highway is marked as going off to the left. In GSV, B83 follows George street.

Cheers,
Vincent.

This is an interesting (if disappointing) find

This exact image has been posted in this group, and on the facebook page, previously with an F3 shield instead of the NH1 marker. Seems to confirm that the F3 image is doctored.

The hunt for an F3 shield in the wild is still on!

Hi Vincent,

The photo is definitely from the intersection of Pacific Highway and George Street outside Westfield Hornsby.

I'm not sure why NR1 was never signed via George Street, although it wasn't unusual - e.g. NR1 stuck to Pacific Highway through Gosford for many years before eventually being moved to Peats Ridge Road in the 1970s.

Pacific Highway (Peats Ferry Road) through Hornsby was the original signposted route of SR83 too. If I recall correctly, it was mid-1990s that SR83 signs began appearing on Geoge Street.

NR1 was the signposted route via George St, SR83 came along later.

It could well be the NH1 is doctored.

The other image with F3 shield for those who need it. May be a black-and-white image of road and text that says
"CARS ONLY ARS Tollway F3 CARS ONLY CARS ONLY WITHOUT
TRAILERS 83 Pacific Hwy CARS ONLY WITHOUT TRAILERS අக 60d getty
        images® Fairfax Media Archives lihicre T6990 1080764932"

Paul Rands

The reason I suggested the NH1 is doctored is because the F3 is clear and sharp like other signs and the NH1 is dark and fuzzy. The yellow text and border should be as bright or close to it as the other signs. Also the green on the shield is the same freeway green as the rest of the sign, and it's dark in this image.

In the words of Fox Mulder, I want to believe (that there really was an F3 shield)

I agree the F3 looks like the original sign. I wonder what motivation the SMH would have had to doctor the photograph?

I have seen a colour photo of the same sign, from a similar era, and it shows NH1. If I can find it again I'll post it up.
As the image below is the only photograph in existence showing an F3 shield, I'm leaning towards the F3 sign being a very well executed photoshop.

Yes, that's correct.
At one point George Street was signed as Alt-NR1 but the photo on Ozroads (thanks Paul) is the only one that has surfaced

Dredging this topic up again, I found an absolute cracker shot of the Hillas Creek Bridge on the Hume Highway while it was still in use, shortly before the bypass was opened: https://media.gettyimages.com/id/1078993876/photo/gundagai-the-tumut-turn-off-on-the-hume-highway.jpg?s=2048x2048&w=gi&k=20&c=23hzpUEMNirpVNwMaPeqPlimNYiy_5Z8PmRI3iKOwYc= (let me know if it doesn't work, I remember us having dramas with access when we were talking about this last year)

Not sure if Fairfax/Getty is making more images available on a periodic basis, but I'm certainly checking and I don't recall having seen this one before.

Cheers,

Looks like a facepalm on the Tumut ID sign too - NH18 instead of NR18?

Linked worked for me - seems you need a non-Australian VPN to find these in search but the direct links work OK.

I think you may be right about the NH shield Sam, I was trying to figure out what it was. I also thought the sign below didn't have NH31 shields, but I think they might be on either side of the sign rather than in the centre.

Yes, the NH31 shields are on each end of the sign. DMR used to do double-ended chevrons this way for some reason - have seen them in the odd older photo.
