I randomly stumbled across https://investment.infrastructure.gov.au/projects/ProjectDetails.aspx?Project_id=117866-21NSW-NP, though a disclaimer in advance that I could find no other evidence of duplication elsewhere. This project is also a long way ahead from becoming a reality.

Am I the only one to feel that if this does ever happen, the Singleton Bypass should be constructed as a super 2 (the video on Caportal suggests that the bridge would not be capable of two trucks driving parallel on the same side were the highway to be widened)?

Nonetheless, this was still an interesting find and I hope this becomes a reality someday.

Singleton Bypass is being constructed as a 'Super 2' (i.e. a two-lane, two-way grade-separated road), I'm not sure what you mean? The bridge over the Hunter River and floodplain would have to be duplicated along with the rest of the road four four-lane operations.

That site is basically the “we’ll think about it” site. They’ll invest $8m into scoping the area and preparing a plan, whether that comes to fruition or not will be years down the road, so grain of salt. Though, a full four lane NEH between Hunter Exp and Scone would be good, avoiding all the big towns before becoming a low traffic country road.

Still, with the singleton bypass being limited to one lane each way, they’d need to widen it first before bothering with a Singleton-Muswellbrook link

That's what I was meant to ask, Sam. Glad to know it'll be constructed as a Super 2, which I wasn't sure if the Singleton Bypass was going to be (did I think it wasn't because of how wide the original two lanes were portrayed in the Caportal video?).

However, are any plans to twin the highway between the Golden Highway and Singleton? That seems more likely to be constructed in the near future.

Not necessarily. There is a lot of local traffic using the highway between Singleton and Muswellbrook that isn't looking to bypass either town.

I used to live in Tamworth and was a regular user of the New England Hwy between there and Newcastle.

As Sam said, the majority of traffic on the route is local. Especially between Maitland and Muswellbrook. A lot of people going to from work at the mines and power stations, and to other jobs too.

Back in 2006, the bypass proposals were all about just getting the trucks that are going through to use a bypass. The Muswellbrook one in particular was marketed just as a heavy vehicle bypass and not intended for general traffic.

There was a fair bit agitation to extend the dual carriageway beyond Branxton to Muswellbrook though, as the traffic numbers and conflicting movements suggest it is needed. The latter being more the issue. There’s also been some work on new housing in the region too, which will also add pressures to it.
