Hi all,

According to Google Maps, State Route 81 (Far North QLD) runs from Mareeba to Weipa AND from Lakeland to Cooktown making it one of these notorious “ Google three-pronged” routes.

On the ground, its somewhat different:

Mareeba – Weipa: State Route 81

Lakeland – Cooktown (at Lakeland): State Route 40

Lakeland – Cooktown (at Cooktown): Tourist Route “Wavy”

See attached images.

Cheers,

Michael

Great to see some photos from this part of the world, I have long wanted to visit it.

A fail as usual from Google Maps and also a typical fail from DTMR - western end of SR40 signposting correctly but the eastern end not. I can confirm that 40 is meant to run all the way to Cooktown but the force of fail is still strong in this one.

P.S. Love the description of the tourist route.

Hmm, on second review, the Tourist Route looks more like a banana
bunch - somewhat fitting I suppose but since there was no explanation
for the symbol one can only guess.

For those interested in Tourist Routes (not me especially), but the
Tourist Route runs from Hopevale (north of Cooktown) south, presumably
to Wujal Wujal and Cape Tribulation. The tourist route is marked at
the Wujal Wujal turnoff on the Mulligan Hwy but is not marked down at
Daintree where it crosses the Daintree River. It is also shown on
distance signs north of Cooktown.

Cheers,
Michael

I agree with Sam, nice to see more pix from this region. I will have a few coming up in the next few updates, but it's less than a dozen.

The sign designs for the most part are quite good too.
