M4-M5 Link Environmental Impact Statement - now on exhibition

M4-M5 Link - Environmental Impact Statement process

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DP&E) has placed the Roads and Maritime Services M4-M5 Link Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on exhibition for a period of 60 days, commencing today.

You now have the opportunity to review the EIS and make a formal submission about the project, to be considered by DP&E as part of its assessment of the project.

What you’ll find in the M4-M5 Link EIS

The EIS describes the key features of the M4-M5 Link project and outlines the key benefits to both motorists and the community once the project is operational. It also describes potential environmental and social impacts such as construction, traffic and noise that may occur during construction and how this will be managed.

One interesting thing that appears to be happening is that many of the major onramps (Wattle St, M5 Link, Iron Cove Link/Anzac Bridge westbound) are being split in two before they enter the tunnel, allowing traffic to merge onto either side of the tunnel to reduce weaving.

The northbound mainline tunnel will do the same thing, being split into two one lane tunnels. Methinks this will be a bottleneck in the future when the F6 is hooked up...

Definitely a weave control measure for relatively closely spaced interchanges that, being in tunnel, have less margin for driver error than on the surface. In sections the tunnels are five lanes wide per carriageway, so that's far too much weaving if interchanges were constructed naively left entrance-left exit (and worse if constructed right entrance-left exit - the poor result of which is seen on both the M5 and M1).
