Does anybody know the plans of the proposed Phantom Interchange F3 Freeway?
I was reading on Ozroads.com that it was a detailed plan that was shot down by the NPWS. I had a look at some old archived maps of the area at that time, and it looked promising...

(1991)
(1984)
(1976)
(1965)
(1961 - You can see the rough clearing, where the freeway would go)

I don't know, I think it would've been a more scenic and efficient route, with fewer kms to put on the odometer.

Hi Adrian,

There is a good DMR plan on Ozroads showing the planned alignment:

From what I understand, the current route with the very steep approaches to Mooney Mooney Creek was definitely a worse outcome for the road design, but no doubt a better environmental outcome.

I have to say that availability of so much historical material online these days, including things like the aerial photography posted below, is just mind-blowing. Research has come a very long way from sitting in the RTA Library making hand-written notes and the odd scan, while trying to cross-reference with printed topographic maps.

Here's what it would've looked like. If they did do this, then there would've been more usage of Peats Ridge Expressway then (Maybe as an alternative route).

This explains why the heavy vehicle station has such a large exit. Never knew this

I've recreated the path where the Original Proposed Alignment would've gone through. I have included signs, etc.

(You can download it and look at it closer. Its in 4k)

I think this would've been a better alignment, but I think the current alignment is more iconic (with the fwy bridge over the water and the deep cuttings).
