Hi,

The Tullamarine Fwy is slowly being upgraded at the moment and new signage is popping up, including this one featuring 'M31 TO             SYDNEY'

Nice-ish but they obviously should have swapped the TO and M31. Also SYDNEY should be in upper/lower case. Lol if I'm not mistaken, at the other end Melbourne only gets a mention around 40 or so km out nr Campbelltown and then only on a RD sign...

arggh brand new and still awful. Apart from the weird SYDNEY focal point, all the spacing between  the elements is bad, the padding of the airport insets is bad, the borders are insufficiently rounded, the position of the aeroplane icon is inconsistent, the through routes and their name plaques don't even seem to line up, the lane allocation arrows are confusing.

Why is a new sign on such a major road so wrong?

The gap between the "TO" and "SYDNEY" was likely where the M31 was meant to be placed.  That said you could also travel to SYDNEY via Melb Airport. :-)

Is there a cover plate next to SYDNEY? Could be to SYDNEY ROAD, perhaps? I dunno... find it strange to see a focal point in all caps when all others aren't.

Yeah, on the M31 between Brooks Road and Campbelltown Road.

Terrible.   So many signs are still referring to the 'Tulla as MR43 and not M2 still.

I'm assuming the arrow positioning is temporary, pending completion of the roadworks.

The M31 is a joke though - I wonder if it said 'To M80 SYDNEY' for some reason? Or even M2?

Agree the designs are not to the usual standards

The new Ring Road signs on the upgraded section all say "TO M31 Sydney" on them Greensborough-bound, so I assume this is simply to fit in with that and provide consistency. I agree "Sydney" is a bit of a weird focal point, although I guess it's intentionally designed to cater to long-distance transport traffic.

I also note that a lot of the new freeway signage (on the Tulla, WRR, and Monash upgrades) now include focals in their exit signs, which has been quite rare for Melbourne.

I noticed a number of these new signs have now been coverplated with "Greensborough" and/or "To M31 SEYMOUR" now.

Maybe they decided that 'Sydney' really was a poor focal, this far away from the Hume?

That's some poor quality coverplating
