Can anyone remember when yellow centre lines were phased out in NSW?

That's the last question I was expecting from you :P

I think 1988 or 89... But only going off memory, not written fact.

My memory is 1987 ... the yellow double lines on my street were
repainted white by Council in that year.

I remember them being phased out from about Mid 1987 to about early 1988. I can remember going up the Murrurundi Gap in late 1987 and seeing yellow lines on the New England Highway en route to Brisbane. On the next trip up there, the lines had been painted white.

Nihat - That would make you part of the true Alpha-numeric generation - not old enough to care about the old system that much, young enough to appreciate a brand new system as it's largely the only one you know :)

Another question you guys can answer, because I can't remember :)
When were double lines at intersections changed to single lines, i.e.

GIVE WAY
= = = = = = changed to - - - - - - - -

Hi BJ,

I think NSW just had single unbroken lines, same with ACT.

On a semi-related note, I've noticed in suburban Perth recently
they've started replacing double centre lines with single lines. I
understand they've had them for quite some time over east (if not
forever) so I guess they're bringing WA into line with the other
states?

Single unbroken centre lines are not used in NSW. Both single and double unbroken centre lines are used in other states afaik. So I don't know if it a national standard.

In Perth there's definitely a lot of ambiguity over what exactly a single centre line means. I admit I don't even know *goes off to read the Road Traffic Code*

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated!

I'm too young to remember them in general use...

Sam, I disagree with you. I think theyre used when there 4 lanes of traffic (2 each way) with no median strip. Not always of course, but they're around.

Sam - I swear I've seen them somewhere in NSW, but everywhere I've street-viewed is coming up double lines.

I will retract my statement, however I will have a very keen eye out over the next few days.

Apologies.

This is either an amazing coincidence, or you received a copy of the
Sydney Morning Herald, May 19 2011, prior to 0018 AEST on May 19....

I think it was just Vic. I remember the 'strange' single lines when in NSW - and very wide ones in ACT. It always seemed 'wrong' to me of course. But as to when. I don't really remember. Somewhere around 1980 would be my guess.

The other marking from those days, rarely seen now was where a painted circle was placed at the end of the centre line at an intersection that had no Stop or Give Way signs. Of course NSW had the silent policemen. In Victoria, we just had painted ones. I found one in Sale a few years ago. I think it is still there.

Darren.

From today's Column 8:

''Yellow lines are still in use in the Snowy Mountains, where white
lines might be obscured by or confused for light snow or ice,'' writes
Greg Oehm, of Goulburn (Column 8, yesterday). ''But outside of the
mountains, it's certainly been a while. That means that the lines on
the road between Wollombi and Cessnock mentioned by Ken haven't been
repainted, or the road resurfaced, in about 20 years!''

And in Saturday's Column 8:

On the subject of white and yellow double lines on roads (Column 8,
since Thursday), Graham Brisbane, of Wollongong, informs us that he
supervised the painting of the first double white lines in NSW, in
Port Kembla, in 1988. He explains that the change was made to save
hundreds of thousands of dollars by not having to clean out yellow
paint from the drums that would then have to be used for white paint
for other purposes. So, yes - any road with double yellow lines still
visible hasn't been given much in the way of maintenance for many
moons.

I found another example of single centre line in Sydney - this time
on a two lane carriage way (one lane each direction) and can be seen
in Google Maps:

Yes I've been on that road, I think most of the roads in there are the same right?

Does an internal road within a cemetery count as a public road
though? ;) You see plenty of non-standard stuff in shopping centre car
parks, factory loading dock aprons and the like.

I don't think the cemetery roads are public roads...
