Hi all,

Here’s some more from South Australia. This time the Northern Expressway and surrounding area. Drove up from Adelaide, along Pt Wakefield Rd, Northern Expressway, Gawler Bypass and bit of the newly duplicated Sturt Hwy. Our kids woke up a few km north of Gawler so to avert the wrath of my wife I turned around before getting to Nuriootpa *grin*.

Some interesting finds as discussed below:

Pt Wakefield Rd1.jpg – new distance sign. Interesting to see Wallaroo getting a Guernsey here as traditionally no Yorke Peninsula towns were mentioned on the A1 until Port Wakefield. A bit of an overkill with both Virginia and Two Wells shown as well.

Pt Wakefield Rd2.jpg – interesting directional sign to show motorists to not use Waterloo Corner Road to connect to the Northern Expressway. Its bizarre that “Waterloo Corner Road” is associated with Angle Vale as the road actually heads south-east from the A1 and not north-west to Angle Vale! Nevertheless, when I was younger and our family trying to get to the mid north of SA from the Fleurieu Peninsula, we used to use Heaslip Road/Angle Vale Road to get to Gawler without having to trawl through Salisbury and Elizabeth on the A20. So maybe we weren’t the only ones!

I would’ve thought this sign could have been designed a bit better though. Looks a bit weird with two panels with different roads being “straight on”.

Pt Wakefield Rd3.jpg – new distance sign southbound from the Northern Exp interchange. This is the first time Gepps Cross has got onto any distance signs – as Adelaide traditionally has not had distance signs within its suburban area so its strange to see Adelaide suburbs actually on these signs!

Northern Exp1.jpg – first distance sign on the Northern Exp. The on-ramp southbound from the A1 onto the M20 was still getting built so theres no access from the north yet. As for the sign – Truro???? Why is that on there! Surely some allowance for a destination on the A32 was important, such as Broken Hill or Tarlee? Also, ive never understood why SA continues with state parochialism and tends to avoid targeting interstate destinations. I would’ve thought Mildura would be a better long range focal for the A20 than Renmark, given Mildura is 5-6 times larger!

Gawler bypass1.jpg – pretty sure this is a new sign.

Gawler Bypass2.jpg – southbound along the Gawler bypass – new distance sign with the distance to Adelaide VIA the M20, even though it’s a longer distance.

Gawler Bypass3.jpg – the Gawler bypass has been re-designed and modified such that you now have to exit to continue on the old alignment and to Main North Road.

Sturt Hwy1.jpg – start of the Sturt Hwy – note how the road is now duplicated. Here is what it used to look like: http://www.hotkey.net.au/~krool/photos/sa/SturtHwy2.jpg

This distance sign has also been taken away and NOT replaced!

Sandy Creek – Barossa Vly Hwy.jpg – Interesting to see “Barossa Valley” as the focal point here. It’s the only time Ive ever seen it as everywhere else references are made to Nuriootpa or Tanunda.

B34 Williamstown.jpg – BirdWood – I like the capital W in the towns name.

That’s all for now – enjoy!

Cheers,

Michael

Awesome pix there Michael. SA always has good weather in summer for photos if you ask me.

Am liking a lot of the newer signage, consistency is improving, except maybe with the focals.

The fork signs are a bit cluttered, but seeing these are recent additions to the network it's understandable. Diagrammatic signs haven't really been used in SA until somewhat recently from what I can tell.

Either way all the examples shown are still way better than the recent crap you see in NT, ACT and QLD.

Angle Vale would have been used as a focal for Waterloo Corner Road as the intersection of Waterloo Corner Road and Heaslip Road (which goes to Angle Vale) is only just down the road from Port Wakefield Road

Correct, travelling north on Port Wakefield Rd, the only reason to turn
onto Waterloo Corner Rd was go onto Heaslip Rd. If you were going to
Salisbury or sububs to the North-west of their, a traveller would have
already turned off.

The Northern Expressway was built to stop trucks and cars using Heaslip
road and Angle Vale as an unofficial bypass of Elizabeth.

Hi,

Forgot to add, the A52 sign at the new interchange at the Gawler Bypass
and Northern Expressway is the only place I've seen that new route
number on signage.

I visited a friend at Blakeview, and all up and down Main North Road in
northern suburbs, it is still signposted as National A20.

Only Nearmap seems to have the new route on its maps.

I wonder how long it will take for the signs to be changed.

Tristan.

Oh yeah, that's my handiwork on OpenStreetMap - and thus NearMap, which uses OSM data. OK, I only based it on that sign on the Gawler Bypass, but I'm happy to update it once there's more signs erected or amended. I'm presuming that route 20 (the NHM20/NHA20 complex) is officially rerouted via the NExy, which justifies my amendments.

Cheers,
Alex.

Hey,

The NHM20/NHA20 has been re-routed via the Northern Expressway. The
signs on the new road all confirm this.

However other than that Gawler Bypass sign, no other signage has been
updated with the new A52 route.

I would have though the signage would have been a part of the project
works for the new road.

I'd leave Main North Rd as the A52 because that is the intention of the
state government.

Regards,
Tristan

Thanks for the photos Michael!

Pt Wakefield Rd2.jpg - this sign looks retarded! I have noticed this has been happening in quite a few places - both 'through' panels should have the arrow on the same side, i.e. the left side for this sign. I don't understand why it has been confused in this way. I don't think the sign is necessarily warning people not to use Waterloo Corner Road but it appears to be a changeable message sign so it can warn people if the expressway is closed...

Pt Wakefield Rd2.jpg – interesting directional sign to show motorists to not use Waterloo Corner Road to connect to the Northern Expressway. Its bizarre that “Waterloo Corner Road” is associated with Angle Vale as the road actually heads south-east from the A1 and not north-west to Angle Vale!
