Has anyone purchased this?
I'm undecided whether the money is worth it. Seems steep for a 'box'. Thoughts?

I printed off all the PDFs that have been uploaded on the Melway site a few years ago and put them in a folder. Sure, ain't as authentic but factoring in the ink costs, etc. it would have been a fraction of the asking price for the real thing.

Does seem extremely steep considering that the reprinted first editions of the Sydney Gregory's, 1956 Melbourne UBD and first edition of the Brisbane UBD (sometime in the 1950s iirc) were around $30 RRP.

The high cost is a bit weird considering they made all the Edition 1
maps freely available on their web site, as well as a few extra
Edition 2, 3, 4 & 5 maps that weren't covered by Edition 1.

The only consolation might be that a good condition original edition 1
costs a lot more - in excess of $300 on eBay - and they don't come up
very often.

Presumably some people might buy the Edition 1 reproduction as an
investment, but I'm not sure they will increase in value over time, at
least not in the short term.

I did manage to score a good condition 7th edition (1974) for about
$20 a couple of years ago. Maybe I was just lucky.

What I find a bit odd is a 2015 Melway is listed as $62.95 on their
web site, yet the same directory is $45.95 at Officeworks.

I've considered buying the commemorative edition even though I've
downloaded the maps from the web - there are still bits on the edges
which are missing and it's a nice keepsake to have.

Having said that, I'd be more likely to buy the UBD from the 1950s
because it shows Melbourne totally pre-freeway, with several railways
still in operation that had closed by the time Melway was first
published. Only trouble with older directories is, several outer
suburbs aren't covered - Ringwood is the limit to the east!! How to find
something with Melway coverage but pre-Melway information... mmmm

I had wanted the Commemorative Edition 1 when it came out, but wasn't sure I wanted to spend that much - I already had an edition 2 in excellent condition that I picked up for about $10 long ago. But in 2013 I happened to notice that Ausway were selling them on Click Frenzy (24 hours only) for $80 posted. So in a frenzy, I clicked and got one. :)

Considering that they still seem to have good stocks of them several years later, there may possibly be a similar sale again. Or not.

Other than the repro directory itself, there's also some interesting history of Melway and those behind it as well as a time line of Melbourne as each edition was published. Oh, and the nice presentation box. :) Whether that extra is worth paying the normal asking price is not something I can really answer. Some obviously will, others won't. For what I paid, I'm quite happy with it.

Darren.
