It looks like QMR have uploaded a fancy new version of Trasicad to their website. The big thing for us roadgeeks is that third party fonts (like Roadgeek) actually work properly in this version.

https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/business-industry/Road-systems-and-engineering/Software/TraSiCAD

The reasoning behind the new release is some sort of upcoming change in July to Australian Standards for highway signs - AS1744.

This means that the weird and wacky old Australian Standard font with weird proprietary font sizing and spacing has been made obsolete, and off the shelf fonts can be used without the strange font errors that we used to experience with Trasicad. To my eyes, the road name patch and alphas look a tad off, but certainly is a lot better than what we're used to.

In the NSW RMS version, if you select the new AS1744-2017 ruleset (default is RMS 2008), it looks very weird. I hope it isn't a sign of things to come...

That’s fantastic news Brendan!

I can’t wait to go and set it up.

What this does mean is we may see more signs with non-standard fonts once people catch on they can use anything they like in there. This has already been seen on some signs in the ACT, both permanent and temporary

What fonts do you guys use on this? I've been using the old Roadgeek ones from years ago but the text on the road name patches just looks incredibly wrong and I can't get it right.

I used Roadgeek and I agree, the road name patches look wrong compared to what we're used to with AS1744.

It's probably because of the way the two fonts were designed. AS1744 was designed in the 1970s for use with custom DMR software on mainframes, and outlined different spacing for all sorts of different letter combinations.

Read the foreword of this document for more info - https://infostore.saiglobal.com/store/PreviewDoc.aspx?saleItemID=2813885

Now that the Australian Standard is an exact copy of the FHWA font file as of 11 days ago (I have all except for Series E Modified), I suppose we should expect to see some more 'incredibly wrong' road name patches in the near future?

Only thing you're dreaming about is that sign being able to fit inside a tunnel :)

Is there a problem with the descenders on the "y” and “p”?

What font are you using for the main legend text? Roadgeek Series E M is probably the best one to use if you're still using the older AS1744 font.

Yeah the AS1744. I'll play around with Roadgeek.
